
Stillwell’s Double-Double Paces Volleyball in 3-2 Setback against Harvard

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Sabrina Stillwell posted a double-double on 15 kills and a career-high 20 digs, but Brown University volleyball fell to Harvard University, 3-2 (23-25, 20-25, 25-19, 25-14, 15-9), on Friday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Playing in their first home match since Sept. 22, the Bears (8-8, 1-5 Ivy) captured the first two sets before the visiting Crimson (8-7, 3-3 Ivy) rallied to take the final three frames.
Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) tallied her 10th double-double of the season and notched a double-digit kill performance for the 13th time this year. She now has 988 career kills.
Junior Makena Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) registered her second double-double of the year behind 10 kills and a season-high 17 digs alongside three aces. Sophomore Eliza Grover (Menlo Park, Calif.) recorded her eighth double-figure kill effort of the year with 10 kills.
Freshman Kristin Sellers (Menlo Park, Calif.) distributed a team-high 27 assists, senior Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) compiled her first double-double of the year on 11 digs and 10 assists, and freshman libero Paris Winkler (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) contributed 18 digs.
In a first set that saw 14 ties and six lead changes, Brown emerged with a 25-23 victory. After Harvard took a 22-21 edge late in the frame, the Bears closed the set on a 4-1 run. Ehlert and Winkler posted four kills and six digs in the set respectively.
The Bears extended their set lead to 2-0 with a 25-20 win in set two behind five kills on .500 hitting and seven digs from Stillwell. Leading 14-12, Brown used a 6-1 run to pull ahead 20-13. The Crimson came within 23-20 before the Bears claimed the stanza's final two points.
Harvard remained in the match with a 25-19 win in set three. After Brown cut the lead to 13-11, the Crimson went on a 10-1 run to gain a 23-12 edge. The Bears responded with a 7-1 spurt to trim the margin to 24-19 before the visitors gained the last point.
The Crimson sent the match to a fifth set with a 25-14 win in set four. A 5-0 run allowed Harvard to pull ahead 12-6 early in the frame. The Crimson remained ahead at 20-11 and finished the set on a 4-0 run.
After Harvard opened set five with a 5-1 lead, Brown sliced the margin to 6-4. The Crimson remained ahead 8-4 at the switch and the Bears could come no closer than four points as the visitors claimed the period, 15-9.
For Harvard, Christina Cornelius tallied 18 kills, 10 blocks, and nine digs, Bella Almanza dished out a match-best 49 assists, and Anna Uhr came up with a match-high 22 digs.
In Ivy League play, three of Brown's last four matches have gone to five sets with the Bears posting a 1-2 record in those contests, including a 3-2 comeback win at Penn on Sept. 29.
Next, Brown hosts Dartmouth College tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 13, at 5:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
