
No. 14 Men's Water Polo Beats Iona in OT, Falls at No. 16 St. Francis

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS and NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – No. 14 Brown University men's water polo defeated Iona College in overtime, 13-12, after falling to No. 16 St. Francis Brooklyn, 5-4, in its first games in NWPC play this season on Saturday at Hynes Pool and the SFC Aquatic Center respectively.
Playing their first games since Sept. 20, the Bears (8-5, 1-1 NWPC) overcame a 10-7 deficit inside of the final four minutes of regulation to beat the Gaels (3-9, 0-2 NWPC) in their second game of the day after their rally came up short against the Terriers (4-5, 2-0 NWPC) in their NWPC opener.
In the win over the Gaels, senior Tyler Kirchberg (Orinda, Calif.) scored four goals, junior Travis Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mass.) tied the game with one second left in regulation, junior Spencer Carroll (Newport Beach, Calif.) gave the Bears their first lead of the game in overtime, and sophomore Armen Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.) scored the game-winning goal.
Next, Brown plays at No. 11 Princeton on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 2:30 p.m.
Game 1 – No. 16 St. Francis Brooklyn 5, No. 14 Brown 4
BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. – No. 14 Brown scored the game's last two goals and did not allow a goal over the final 11 minutes but fell to No. 16 St. Francis Brooklyn, 5-4, on Saturday morning at the SFC Aquatic Center in its NWPC opener.
In their first game of the day and their first contest since Sept. 20, the Bears netted the only two goals of the fourth quarter but could not rally back from a 5-2 deficit entering the fourth frame against the Terriers, who played in their first home game of the season.
Seniors Tommy Bush (Lafayette, Calif.) and Austin Hwang (Laguna Hills, Calif.), junior Travis Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mass.), and sophomore Armen Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.) each registered one goal.
Senior Tyler Kirchberg (Orinda, Calif.) dished out two assists while sophomore Hudson Rawlings (Murrieta, Calif.) tallied two steals and two ejections drawn.
Freshman goalie Riad Hallal (Coronado, Calif.) and junior net-minder Will Renken (South Pasadena, Calif.) each turned aside three shots.
After the Terriers opened the game with a 2-0 lead, Deirmenjain scored at the 2:33 mark to bring the Bears within 2-1 heading into the second quarter. St. Francis converted the only goal of the second stanza to take a 3-1 edge at halftime.
Hwang opened the second half's scoring, cutting Brown's deficit to 3-2 with 5:15 to go in the third quarter. The hosts responded with back-to-back goals to bring a 5-2 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Bouscaren initiated Brown's late rally, scoring with 3:43 to play to narrow the margin to 5-3. Bush trimmed the score to 5-4 with 1:51 remaining, but the Terriers kept the visitors out of the net the rest of the way.

Game 2 – No. 14 Brown 13, Iona 12 (OT)
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Senior Tyler Kirchberg scored four goals as No. 14 Brown rallied to beat Iona in overtime, 13-12, on Saturday evening at Hynes Pool in its second game of the day.
The Bears overcame a 10-7 deficit inside of the final four minutes of regulation to tie the game at 11-11 before taking their first lead of the contest in overtime. Junior Travis Bouscaren (Cambridge, Mass.) tied the game with one second remaining in regulation before junior Spencer Carroll (Newport Beach, Calif.) and sophomore Armen Deirmenjian (Beverly Hills, Calif.) both scored in overtime.
Trailing 10-7 with 3:59 left in regulation, Kirchberg (Orinda, Calif.) converted a 5-meter penalty shot to pull Brown within 10-8. Kirchberg then netted another goal 39 seconds later to make the score 10-9. After an Iona goal made it 11-9, junior Santiago Nunez (Miami, Fla.) scored with 1:04 to play in regulation before Bouscaren tied the game with one second left – the game's first tie since the contest's opening moments.
Carroll gave the Bears' their first lead at 12-11 with 1:30 to go in the first overtime period. The Gaels knotted the score at 12-12 just 10 seconds later, but Deirmenjian netted the game-winning goal at the 1:18 mark of the second overtime session as the Bears pulled out the win.
Kirchberg added four assists and three steals to his four goals while Carroll netted two goals with three steals. Deirmenjian posted a team-high five steals alongside his game winner. Sophomore Hudson Rawlings (Murrieta, Calif.) came up with a goal and four ejections drawn while senior Tommy Bush (Lafayette, Calif.) tallied a goal and three assists.
Senior Rico Burke (San Mateo, Calif.) contributed a goal and three steals while senior Austin Hwang (Laguna Hills, Calif.), Bouscaren, and Nunez each scored one goal.
Brown junior goalkeeper Will Renken (South Pasadena, Calif.) totaled nine saves and three assists.
Iona opened up the contest with a 3-0 lead after the first quarter and built a 4-1 edge despite a goal from Rawlings. Kirchberg narrowed the margin to 4-2 at the 5:07 mark of the second quarter before the Gaels brought a 6-2 edge into halftime.
Burke, Kirchberg, and Hwang scored three consecutive goals to begin the third quarter, pulling Brown within 6-5 with 1:53 remaining in the period. A goal from Bush in between a pair of Iona markers kept the visitors within 8-6 heading to the fourth quarter.
Carroll notched a goal beside another pair of Gael tallies at the start of the fourth quarter as the hosts led 10-7. Kirchberg's penalty shot then began the Bears' 4-1 run to close regulation and force overtime.
