PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior forward Mikela Waldman scored her Ivy League leading seventh goal of the season in the 89th minute to give Brown University women's soccer a 2-1 win over Sacred Heart University on Wednesday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
In their final non-conference game of the year, the Bears (7-2-0) took a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute and allowed an equalizer for the Pioneers (3-6-0) in the 39th minute before pulling back ahead with 1:09 to play for their fourth straight victory.
"Our team never gives up, and I think you've been able to see that all season," Brown head coach Kia McNeill said. "We have an incredible amount of resilience and fight in our team. It goes back to the way we train – we train hard every single day. That's why you see the energy that they have at the end of the game to be able to pull those out."
Waldman (San Francisco, Calif.) netted her third game-winning goal in the last four games and tallied an assist to push her league-best point total to 18 points on the season.
Sophomore Abby Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) registered a goal – her second of the season – and an assist while freshman Star White (Norfolk, Va.) tallied her league-high fifth assist of the year.
Junior goalkeeper Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made three saves in the victory (7-2-0). With her 23rd career win she now stands in a tie for fourth place on Brown's all-time wins list alongside MC Barrett '14.
Carchio recorded the contest's first goal at the 34:08 mark as she finished off a cross in the goal area from the right side from Waldman. White started the play, controlling the ball in the center of the pitch and sending a pass out wide to Waldman.
The Pioneers countered just over four minutes later, drawing level at 1-1 at 38:41. Melanie DaSilva worked the ball to Taylor Casale who sent a through ball to Lindsay Corallo who then found the back of the net from the left side.
After over 50 minutes without a goal, Waldman netted the game winner at 88:51. After playing a short corner to Carchio, Waldman gained the ball back on a feed from Carchio and drove a ball across the face of goal that deflected into the net. Junior Jennifer Caruso (Brockton, Mass.) pressured the SHU defense on the play.
For the match, Brown led in shots (16-7) and corner kicks (10-5) while SHU held a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Pioneer net-minder Nicole Sambuco stopped one shot in the loss (3-6-0).
Next, Brown opens Ivy League play at home against Dartmouth on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 1:00 p.m.
