PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Celia Story scored an equalizing goal in the first half, and freshman Star White netted the game-winning goal in the second half to lift Brown University women's soccer to a 2-1 win over Central Connecticut State University on Sunday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
The Bears (6-2-0) trailed 1-0 in the 11th minute but rallied with goals in the 24th and 55th minutes to defeat the visiting Blue Devils (3-5-0) and secure their third straight win.
"I thought it was a great game," head coach Kia McNeill said. "For us these games are a little bit less about the result and more about us continuing to get better every single game. I think you are starting to see more of our attacking presence and different personalities coming out on the field."
Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) posted her fourth goal of the year and added an assist on White's goal while White tallied her third goal of the season and her first collegiate game-winning goal.
Senior Mikela Waldman (San Francisco, Calif.) registered two assists – her third career game with two assists – while classmate Katy Schmidt (Corvallis, Ore.) notched her first career assist.
Junior goalkeeper Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made four saves in the victory (6-2-0) and now has 22 career wins, putting her in a tie for fifth place on Brown's career wins list with Sarah Gervais '04.
Trailing 1-0, Story drew the Bears level at 23:35 as she finished on the edge of the goal area off a cross from the right side from Waldman. Schmidt started the play with a pass out wide to Waldman.
Brown took the lead at the 54:10 mark as White rose up inside the six-yard box and headed home a cross from the right side from Story who received a feed from Waldman to initiate the action.
The Blue Devils went ahead 10:25 into the match as Yo Tachibana ran onto a through ball from Kelly Halligan – who received a pass from Charlotte Maurer – and slotted a shot into the goal after an initial block.
The Bears nearly went ahead 3-1 in the 57th minute as a shot from Story from the end line went just wide of the left post. At the other end, Etzel dove to her right to make a save in the 59th minute to keep Brown in the lead.
For the match, Brown led in shots (19-11), shots on goal (8-5), and corner kicks (11-7).
CCSU goalkeeper Ashley Cavanaugh turned aside six shots in the loss (3-4-0).
Next, Brown hosts Sacred Heart on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 7:00 p.m. and opens Ivy League play at home with Dartmouth on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 1:00 p.m.
