DALLAS – Garrett McLaughlin scored the only goal of the game in the 61st minute to lead Southern Methodist past the Brown men's soccer team, 1-0, in Sunday evening's non-conference match at Westcott Field.
Brown suffered its first loss of the season, snapping a four-game winning streak to move to 4-1 overall, while SMU improved to 6-1 on the season.
Senior keeper Joey Cipicchio (Columbus, Ohio) made three saves for the Bears, while Michael Nelson registered one stop for the Mustangs.
Brown tested Nelson early when Jack Hagstrom (Middleton, Wis.) put a shot on target after back-to-back blocked shot by the Bears, but the SMU keeper kept the visitors off the board, as both teams settled in defensively for a scoreless first half. Brown outshot the Mustangs, 5-4, in the opening 45 minutes.
After a power outage to one of the lights forced a delay five minutes into the second half, the first of two during the stanza, McLaughlin put the Mustangs on the board at 60:50 with his fifth tally of the season. Jared Rice ran down the left side and sent a long cross to the middle of the field, where McLaughlin was able to re-direct a header past Cipicchio, giving the home team the lead.
Brown had a late chance with just over two minutes remaining, when the Bears pushed the ball past an SMU defender, but Austin Lind's attempt went wide into the side of the goal.
Hagstrom led all players with four shots. SMU held a slim edge in shots, 12-10.
Brown returns to play on Saturday, September 23 when the Bears host Rhode Island at 7 PM.
