PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Joey Cipicchio (Columbus, Ohio) posted four saves as the Brown men's soccer team battled intrastate rival Rhode Island to a scoreless tie in Saturday night's non-conference match at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Brown moves to 4-1-1 on the season. Rhode Island now stands at 3-2-2 overall.
The Brown defense held URI to without a shot on target until the final minute of regulation, while Cipicchio registered his third shutout of the season. Rhode Island keeper Nils Leifhelm made four saves on the other end.
Neither team was able to put a shot on target in a defensive first half, as the home side held a slim lead in shots, 4-2.
Senior Nico Lozada (Dallas, Texas) broke through with back-to-back bids early in the second stanza, but Leifhelm stopped both attempts to keep the game scoreless.
Liam Daley was able to give the Rams a chance at 89:04 when he redirected a shot in front after a free kick. Nevertheless, Cipicchio corralled the attempt to send the game into extra time.
Brown's best chance in the contest came just 1:10 into the first overtime, as Toby Howell (Bradenton, Fla.) broke free after a URI defender slipped on a long pass, but Leifhelm made a diving save to preserve the tie. Cipicchio returned the favor at the end of the second overtime with consecutive saves following a corner kick as the two teams ended in a draw.
Brown and URI were even in shots, 12-12. The Rams held a slim edge in corner kicks, 8-7.
