PROVIDENCE, R.I. - After trailing 1-0 at the half, the Brown field hockey team regrouped in the second and generated four goals in less than 10 minutes, including two from junior Rachel Lanouette (Windham, N.H.), to defeat Siena, 4-1, at Goldberger Family Field on Friday.
"It was a good match," said head coach Jill Reeve. "We did some nice things in the first half and lacked a bit of finish. I'm happy we found the back of the cage in the second half."
Even though the Bears held an 8-3 advantage in shots for the first frame, Siena (0-7) took a 1-0 lead into the break with a score from Brianna Muniz (25:16). Brown opened the second with a tally from freshman Anya Nayak (Ann Arbor, Mich.) at 53:17, her first collegiate goal, with junior Ellie Seid (Larchmont, N.Y.) providing the assist to give the Brown offense momentum. Soon after, Lanouette added what proved to be the game winner at 55:23 on a penalty corner, with sophomore Corinne Condie (St. Louis, Mo.) and sophomore Gina Openshaw (Annapolis, Md.) registering the assists. The goal was also Lanouette's first-career goal.
Brown (1-4) wasn't done scoring as freshman Anagha Nayak (Ann Arbor, Mich.) added a security goal at 58:15, her fourth goal in five games, while Lanouette fired in her second score of the day to give the Bears a commanding 4-1 lead at 60:43. Freshman Anna Kaneb (Manchester, Mass.) added the helper on Lanouette's second tally for her first collegiate point. From there Brown controlled the possession en route to its victory.
Junior Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, Pa.) made two saves for the Bears in the game while Mary Crumlish stopped eight shots on the other side.
The Bears outshot the Saints 25-7 overall and also doubled the visitor's in penalty corner opportunities, 10-5. With the win, Brown improves to a 5-0 all-time against Siena.
The Bears are back in action on Sunday, Sept.17 with an away contest at Northeastern starting at 2:00 p.m.
Video of all Brown field hockey home contests and all Ivy League games, home and away, will be broadcast live on the Ivy League Network.
