TULSA, Okla. – Senior Nico Lozada (Dallas, Texas) and junior Toby Howell (Bradenton, Fla.) both scored in the first half as the Brown men's soccer team knocked off No. 20 Tulsa, 2-1, Friday night at Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
Brown (4-0) earned its fourth straight victory for the program's best start since the 2007 season. Tulsa, fresh off a win over then-No. 1 Stanford last weekend, moves to 2-2-1 overall.
Brown keeper Joey Cipicchio (Columbus, Ohio) made five saves, all in the first half, to earn the victory. Marcel Da Silva recorded four saves on the other end for the Golden Hurricane. Tulsa outshot Brown, 14-8, overall.
Brown opened up the scoring in the 15th minute when Lozada notched his first tally of the season. The senior chipped the ball over the head of Da Silva at 15 yards out, rushed toward the net and then punched in the go-ahead goal right in front for the early lead.
Jacob Gooden scored the equalizer for Tulsa less than ten minutes later at 23:39, as he knocked home a one-timer on a feed from Rollie Rocha about eight yards in front of the net.
Nevertheless, the Bears responded in the 32nd minute when Howell scored his second goal in as many games. Lozada started the play when he launched a pass from midfield, before Howell beat Da Silva to the ball and gained enough space to blast a shot into the open net for the one-goal lead at the half.
Tulsa outshot Brown by a 10-4 margin in the opening 45 minutes, but the Bruno backline maintained the one-goal lead the rest of the way, holding the Golden Hurricane to without a shot on net in the second half.
Tulsa had back-to-back corner kicks with just over four minutes left in regulation, but could not find the back of the net, as the Bears secured their fourth straight victory.
The two teams were equal in shots on goal with six apiece. Tulsa held the edge in corners, 8-2.
Brown will return to action on Sunday when they visit SMU at 7:30 PM EST.
