Morant Wins ECAC Gymnast of the Year, Gymnastics Takes Bronze at ECACs

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Caroline Morant earned Co-ECAC Gymnast of the Year honors, six Bears totaled 11 All-ECAC honors, and Brown University gymnastics came in third place at the 2017 ECAC Division I Women's Gymnastics Championship on Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Morant (Chicago, Ill.) won the floor title and came in third on vault and bars, finishing in the top three in all events in which she competed. She gained First Team All-ECAC on all three events. Morant finished her career with 13 All-ECAC honors and three ECAC titles.
In the team standings, Yale took the title with a 194.600 while Cornell came in second with a 194.450. The Bears tallied a season-best 194.125 for third and finished ahead of fourth-place William & Mary (193.925), fourth-place Temple (193.675), and sixth-place Penn (192.075).
Senior Jorden Mitchell (Indianapolis, Ind.) placed fourth in the all-around with a 38.800 and garnered Second Team All-ECAC in the all-around, bars, and beam. She closed her career with nine All-ECAC accolades.
Junior Anya Olson (Farmington Hills, Mich.) took home First Team All-ECAC on floor and Second Team All-ECAC on bars. Sophomore Julia Green (Exton, Pa.), junior Claire Ryan (Greenwood, Minn.), and sophomore Cassidy Jung (San Marino, Calif.) garnered Second Team All-ECAC on vault, bars, and beam respectively.
As a team, Brown set season highs on bars (48.925) and floor (48.725) while posting a 48.425 on vault and 48.050 on beam.
Opening on floor, Morant won the event with a 9.875 while Olson came in third with a 9.800 to tie her personal best. Junior Maggie McAvoy (Charlotte, N.C.) registered a career-high 9.725, Green tallied a 9.725 of her own, and freshman Anne Christman (Amherst, N.H.) scored a 9.600.
Morant came in third on vault with a 9.750, and Green supported her with a 9.725, matching her personal best. Freshman Ally Rudd (Olympia, Wash.) also tied her career high with a 9.675, and Mitchell duplicated her effort with a 9.675 of her own. Olson and Christman both notched a 9.600.
On bars, Morant again led the way with a 9.850 tying a season high and coming in third on the event. Mitchell, Ryan, and Olson all drew level in fifth place with a 9.800 as Mitchell and Ryan set career highs. Rudd rounded out the scoring with a personal-best 9.675.
Closing on beam, Jung established a career high with a 9.825 for fourth place. Mitchell, junior Regan Butchness (Barrington, Ill.), and Green scored a 9.775, 9.725, and 9.600 respectively.
Next, Brown will look to send representatives to the NCAA Regional Championships on Apr. 1 before aiming to qualify as a team to the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships from Apr. 7-9.
