
Women's Hockey Skates Past Harvard, 3-1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Brown women's hockey team defeated Harvard for the first time since 2002 with a 3-1 win at Bright-Landry Hockey Center on Saturday. Freshman Sena Hanson (New Brighton, Minn.) recorded two goals and an assist in the win for the Bears while senior Monica Elvin (Oakland, Calif.) made 42 saves in net. With the victory, Brown moved to 7-22-0 on the season and 5-17-0 in the ECAC while Harvard dropped to 5-19-5 on the year and 5-13-4 in conference action.
Hanson's first goal gave Brown a 1-0 lead at 16:06 in a relatively quiet first period. Harvard had the lone power-play in the frame that Brown was able to fight off. In goal, Elvin recorded 14 saves in the opening period while Brianna Laing of Harvard stopped nine.
Junior Samantha Swanstrom (Ham Lake, Minn.) tallied the Bears' second goal at 8:25 of the second to give them a 2-0 advantage. Sophomore Abby Niewchas (Cochrane, Alberta) and Hanson assisted Swanstrom's goal.
The Crimson generated nine shots to the Bears' five in the second. Each team was 0-for-1 in the second on the power play.
After fighting off two penalties in the game, Brown surrendered a power-play goal to Harvard at 13:39, just before the infraction expired, which pulled the Crimson within one (2-1) with a score from Lexie Laing.
With the Crimson's goalie pulled, Hanson sealed the game for the Bears with an empty net goal at 19:24 for her third point of the contest.
Elvin concluded the game with 42 saves, to record her 16th outing with 30 or more saves. On the other side, B. Laing stopped 26 shots in the Harvard net.
The Crimson outshot the Bears 43-29 overall. Brown was 0-for-2 on the day on the power play while Harvard was 1-for-4.
With three assists against Dartmouth on Friday, Hanson finished the weekend with six points, adding her two goals and one assist effort today.
Brown's win is its first victory against Harvard since Feb. 23, 2002, also a 3-1 win. The last time the Bears defeated the Crimson at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center was Jan. 3, 1998, again a 3-1 victory.
