
Second Half Surge Rallies Northwestern Past Brown, 95-73

Rosemont, Ill. – The final score had Northwestern winning by 22 points, but the Wildcats had to rally from a seven-point second half deficit to earn a 95-73 win over Brown Saturday morning at the Allstate Arena.
"We started with great energy to open the second half, but weren't able to get many good shots in the half court after that," said Brown head coach Mike Martin." "Overall we did a lot of good things, but not enough to win. Credit the Northwestern bench, who really stepped up. Dererk Pardo was really tough to defend in the paint."
The game was decided when Northwestern utilized a 20-3 second half run to break the game open, going from a 55-48 deficit to a 68-58 advantage with 8:59 minutes remaining.
Northwestern had 33 points off the bench, holding the Brown reserves to 19 points.
The Wildcats had an advantage at the free throw line, making 23-of-28 shots from the charity stripe, while Brown connected on 15-of-19 free throws.
Sophomore guard Brandon Anderson (Mahwah, NJ) paced the Bears with a career high 26 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the field, including 3-of-5 from beyond the 3-point arc.
Playing on his birthday, Brown freshman guard Desmond Cambridge (Nashville, TN) scored 22 points with an array of treys and dunks that electrified the Allstate arena crowd. Sophomore forward Joshua Howard (Charlotte, NC) scored just two points for the Bears, but grabbed a team high seven rebounds.
Dererk Pardon was an inside force for the Wildcats, connecting on 6-of-7 field goals and 6-of-8 free throws in scoring a team high 18 points, while grabbing a game high eight rebounds.
Scottie Lindsey chipped in with 14 points for Northwestern and Bryant McIntosh scored 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting for the Wildcats before leaving the court early in the second half due to injury.
Facing a Northwestern squad that earned an NCAA Tournament berth a year ago, Brown trailed by five points at the half, 42-37, despite 12 points by Anderson and 10 points by Cambridge.
A three-point play by Anderson to open the half took the Wildcats out of the of their comfort zone and, after five points by Cambridge and two free throws by Howard, Brown had the lead, 47-46 with 17:37 remaining.
The Bears gained a 49-46 advantage following a steal by Zach Hunsaker (Orem, UT) and an Anderson layup at the 17:14 mark, and extended its lead to seven points, 55-48, on an Anderson trey with 15:30 left in the game.
The Wildcats came storming back with an 8-0 run to go back ahead, 56-55, less than two minutes later on a trey by Lindsey.
The two teams exchanged leads once again, but Northwestern kept up the pressure, building a 68-58 advantage with 8:59 remaining on a tip-in by Gaines to complete the 20-3 run.
Brown returns home for its first game of the new year on Wednesday, January 3 against NJIT. Tip-off is 7:00 pm at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
