PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's swimming & diving team defeated Cornell, 200-100, on Saturday at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center in its last dual meet of the season. Prior to the start of the meet, Brown seniors Molly Gelb (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Katie Roach (Colorado Springs, Colo.) Sydney Tan (Winnetka, Ill.), Caroline Vexler (Moreland Hills, Ohio), Elly Vitek (Western Springs, Ill.) and Emma Wyke (Columbus, Ind.) were honored.
The 200 medley relay team of junior Jenna Zagoren (Cherry Hill, N.J.), junior Ally Donahue (Tampa, Fla.), Vexler and freshman Marley Cross (Seattle, Wash.) started the Bears off with a first place finish in 1:44.07. The B team of freshman Amelia Gilchrist (Greensboro, N.C.), Roach, sophomore Emma Wittmer (Edina, Minn.) and sophomore Maddie Salesky (San Rafael, Calif.) took second in 1:46.41.
Next, sophomore Tatiana Prendella (Bernardsville, N.J.) claimed second in the 1000 freestyle in 10:21.96 with freshman Julia Armitage (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) behind in third (10:21.67).
Vitek won the 200 freestyle in 1:52.11 while junior Sarah Cronin (Westfield, N.J.) (1:53.24), Gilchrist (1:53.87) and sophomore Jackie Karpowicz (Wakefield, R.I.) (1:54.13) went 3-4-5.
In the 100 backstroke, freshman Sarah Welch (Beverly, Mass.) took the top spot in 56.73 while Wyke placed third in 57.86. Welch also later won the 200 backstroke (2:02.49). Wyke (2:05.21) and freshman Zoe Phillips (Salt Lake City, Utah) (2:05.28) went 3-4 in the 200.
Donahue won the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.91. Roach (1:05.54) and sophomore Tiffany Zhao (Beaverton, Ore.) (1:06.19) finished in third and fourth, respectively. Roach took first in the 200 breaststroke in 2:21.52. Donahue placed second in 2:24.75.
The Bears took the top three sports in the 200 butterfly with Vexler winning the event in 2:03.19. Freshman Jessie Blake-West (Belmont, Mass.) finished second in 2:04.02 and Wittmer came in third (2:04.04). Vexler also won the 100 butterfly in 55.94. Wittmer (56.28) and Blake-West (56.95) flip flopped, this time finishing in second and third, respectively.
Cross and Salesky went 2-3 in the 50 freestyle with times of 23.72 and 24.01, respectively.
In diving, freshman Emily Zitkovsky (Lexington, Mass.) won the 3M with a mark of 254.10. Gelb took fourth with 230.85. Gelb came back to win the 1M, scoring a 253.35. Zitkovsky claimed third (236.10).
Cross won the 100 freestyle in 51.18 with Salesky in third (51.93) and Cronin in fourth (52.55).
Prendella won the 500 freestyle in 5:00.12 while Armitage (5:03.93) and sophomore Kendall Crawford (Greenwood Village, Colo.) (5:04.79) went 4-5.
Phillips placed second in the 400 IM, touching the wall in 4:26.59. Roach came in fourth (4:34.66).
To close the meet, Salesky, Cronin, Prendella and Cross won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:26.64. The B team of Welch, Wittmer, Blake-West and Vitek came in second with a time of 3:27.55.
The Bears will next compete in the Ivy League Championships, hosted by Brown at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center, on Wednesday, Feb. 15 through Saturday, Feb. 18.
