
Women's Hockey Edged at Yale, 2-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Sophomore Bridget Carey (Weymouth, Mass.) pulled the Brown women's hockey team within one at 15:37 of the third period but the Bears were unable to score the equalizer as Yale picked up a 2-1 win at Ingalls Rink on Friday night.
With Yale (8-11-3, 6-8-1 ECAC) carrying a 1-0 lead into the third period, Phoebe Staenz gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 cushion at 10:42.
Brown (5-17-0, 3-12-0 ECAC) went on a power play at 12:03 but soon after picked up two infractions of its own. Carey pulled the Bears within one with her fifth goal of the season at 15:37 from the slot. Junior Sam Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.) and sophomore Leah Olson (East Harwich, Mass.) teamed up for the assists. Carey and Donovan have now registered a point in the last three games.
With Brown putting the offensive pressure on, senior Monica Elvin (Oakland, Calif.) was pulled at 18:55. The Bears got off three shots but were unable to knot the contest.
Both teams skated through a scoreless first period with Elvin making 16 saves. The Bears fought off the only penalty in the frame, with Elvin stopping two shots in the scenario.
Yale took a 1-0 lead at 6:07 of the second when Kaitlin Gately put back a rebound. Brown had a power-play opportunity later in the period, but was shutout. Elvin concluded the stanza with 14 stops, already reaching 30 saves for the game, her 10th 30+ save showing of the season.
Elvin concluded the contest with 40 saves while her counterpart Kyra O'Brien tallied 19. Brown was 4-for-4 on the penalty kill while Yale was 2-for-2.
Junior Cynthia Kyin (Stokie, Ill.) finished with four shots on goal while sophomore Abby Niewchas (Cochrane, Alberta) and freshman Sena Hanson (New Brighton, Minn.) recorded three.
The Bears will complete the series against Yale tomorrow (Jan. 28) back in Providence, R.I. at Meehan Auditorium for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
