Providence, R.I. - The Ancient Eight launched its season last week with non-league games for each institution. This week, four league teams will begin Ivy play, highlighted by Saturday's marquee matchup between Brown and Harvard at Brown Stadium, starting at 2:00 pm. The two teams will be playing during the day for the first time since 2008. Saturday's game will be televised live on One World Sports and the Ivy League Digital Network, and is also aired on WPRV AM-790.
The Records: Brown (1-0, 0-0 Ivy) opened its season with a thrilling 35-27 come-from-behind win over Bryant on Saturday. Trailing 21-0 after one quarter, senior quarterback Kyle Moreno engineered five Brown touchdowns, throwing for three and running for another two touchdowns. Harvard (1-0, 0-0 Ivy) also got off to a good start, building a 37-7 lead and cruising to a 51-21 victory over Rhode Island. Senior quarterback Joe Viviano passed for three TD's and ran for another to lead the Crimson.
Moreno Named Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week: Brown senior quarterback Kyle Moreno (Pleasanton, CA) was named the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week after rallying the Bears from a 21-0 deficit by taking part in all five Brown touchdowns. He tossed touchdown passes of 18, 11 and 11 yards. Moreno also scored on a 10 yard run and, after Bryant drew to within one point, 28-27, scored Brown's final touchdown to put the Bears up by eight points. Overall, Moreno completed 16-of-29 passes for 224 yards and zero interceptions, while rushing for 10 yards
The Brown vs. Harvard Series History – 116th Meeting: Brown and Harvard have met 115 times, dating back to 1893, with the Crimson holding an 83-30-2 series advantage. Harvard has won the last five games, including a 53-27 win over the Bears last year in Boston. In 2010, Brown grabbed an early 23-0 lead and cruised to a 29-14 Ivy victory over Harvard in the first night game at Brown Stadium.
TV - One World Sports: Saturday's game will be televised nationwide on One World Sports with Bill Spaulding calling the play and Jack Ford providing the analysis.
Bear Facts:
- Previous to this season, Brown and Harvard had played under the lights each year since 2009. The last time the two teams played in natural daylight was 2008 when the Bears earned a 24-22 victory at Brown Stadium.
- At halftime of Saturday's game, Brown athletics will honor the Warwick North Little League, the New England Little League Champion, who earned a berth in the Little League World Series.
- Senior wide receiver Garrett Swanky (Los Angeles, CA) doesn't get the attention that All-Ivy wide receivers Alex Jette and Troy Doles get, but he came through with a game high five receptions for 65 yards, including his first career touchdown on an 11-yard reception.
- Senior Jordan Ferguson (Ladera Heights, CA), sophomore Sebastian Dovi (Newark, DE) and junior Connor Coughlin (Medford, NY) each registered interceptions against Bryant.
Moreno Takes The Helm At QB: Senior co-captain Kyle Moreno (Pleasanton, CA) has earned the starting nod at quarterback and gives the Bears a dual threat ability to run the read-option. Moreno made the most of his first collegiate start vs. Bryant, rallying the Bears from a 21-0 deficit by taking part in all five Brown touchdowns, including three passing and two via the ground. He tossed touchdown passes of 18, 11 and 11 yards. Moreno also scored on a 10 yard run and, after Bryant drew to within one point, 28-27, scored Brown's final touchdown to put the Bears up by eight points. Overall, Moreno completed 16-of-29 passes for 224 yards and zero interceptions, while rushing for 10 yards. Moreno accounted for four touchdowns against Harvard last year, passing for 307 yards and two touchdowns against the Crimson, while also rushing for 28 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for a season high 78 yards and a touchdown against Dartmouth. He will be backed-up by junior TJ Linta (Bradford, CT).
All-Ivy Alex Jette Headlines Receiving Corps: Brown's wide receiver corps is ranked among the best in the nation and senior Alex Jette (North Attleboro, MA) is considered the most talented and versatile wide receiver in the league. Jette made four catches for a team high 74 yards in Brown's season opening win over Bryant. A two-time First Team All-Ivy wide receiver and return man with exceptional speed, Jette was 10th in the nation last year in receptions, 10th in receiving yards and led the Ivy League and ranked 24th nationally in all-purpose yards, including a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Princeton. He made a career high 16 receptions for 215 yards against Holy Cross. Jette also returns kickoffs for the Bears and had a 99-yard return for a TD last year vs. Princeton. Coach Phil Estes also expects Jette to handle the punting duties for the Bears.

Running Downfield: The development of a powerful and more dynamic run game is a priority and will hinge on the ability of senior Johnny Pena (Tucson, AZ) who ran for 310 yards and six touchdowns a year ago, sophomore David Moodie (Sanford, FL), and junior Jalen Broome (McLean, VA) to carry the load. Broom paced the Bears vs. Bryant with 50 yards on 14 carries, while also catching a pass for 10 yards. Pena ran for 40 yards on 14 carries.
Troy Doles Provides Deep Speed: Senior wide receiver Troy Doles (Saratoga, CA) earned second team All-Ivy honors in 2015 and is Brown's main downfield threat with terrific speed. Doles caught Brown's first touchdown vs. Bryant, an 18-yard reception. He finished the game with two receptions for 32 yards. Last year, he was 10th nationally with 96.3 receiving yards per game, while making 66 catches, 16th best in the nation. Doles caught passes for 100 or more yards six times in 2015, including 147 yards vs. Bryant. He caught eight or more passes four times, including nine receptions vs. Rhode Island and Holy Cross. Doles has 1,463 career receiving yards and 95 career receptions.
Bears Elect Captains: Senior defensive end Robert Hughes (Long Valley, NJ) and senior quarterback Kyle Moreno (Pleasanton, CA) have been elected captains of the 2016 Brown football team.
Defensive Front: Last year's misfortune of injuries to its defensive line should be good news in 2016 with the return of an experienced and talented unit. Senior DE Richard Jarvis (Watertown, MA) paced the defensive front with five tackles against Bryant. Last year, he was a dominant force up front with a team leading 6.5 tackles for loss and 34 tackles overall. Jarvis helped hold together a defensive line decimated by injury last year. Senior co-captain Robert Hughes (Long Valley, NJ) made two tackles vs. Bryant, along with a tackle for loss. He had 17 tackles last year and was Brown's sack leader with three for a loss of 22 yards. Senior Tom Kutschke (Lake Forest, IL), who had a quarterback sack vs. Bryant, made 19 tackles a year ago. Sophomore Daryle Banfield (Bronx, NY), who also had a QB sack vs. Bryant, made 15 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss last year. Sophomore Zach Genaway (Medford, NY) had 14 tackles last season.
Offensive Line: One of the major strengths of the offensive unit is its offensive line that ranked number one in the Ivy League and seventh nationally in sacks allowed, and was ninth in the nation in tackles for loss allowed. Second Team All-Ivy tackles Matt Girard (Holyoke, MA) and Dakota Girard (Wellfleet, MA) are two-year starters, who also helped Brown's passing offense to rank 12th nationally with 288.5 yards per game. The Bears also return starting senior guards Bruce Hall (Leslie, MI) and Clay Eubank (Coto De Caza, CA) along with junior center Christian Montano (Orange, CT), who earned a starting role in the latter third of the season.
Ferguson Leads Secondary The Bears will have to revamp their secondary and the outside linebacker position with senior cornerback Jordan Ferguson (Ladera Heights, CA) the lone returning starter to the secondary. Ferguson intercepted a pass vs. Bryant, made two tackles and broke up three passes. Last year, he intercepted two passes for the Bears, broke up five passes and made 39 tackles overall.
More Interceptions: Sophomore cornerback Sebastian Dovi (Newark, DE) and junior free safety Connor Coughlin (Medford, NY) each intercepted their first career passes vs. Bryant. Coughlin had four tackles and two pass break-ups vs. Bryant and Dovi added three tackles.
The Kicking Game: Bears' head coach Phil Estes will look to junior Jacob Wilner (Dallas, TX), who has the inside track to handle the kicking duties. Senior Alexander Jette will handle the punting duties.
Twyman and Tylki On The Inside: Brown's inside linebacker duo of returning senior Will Twyman (Sudbury, MA) and senior Max Tylki (Wethersfield, CT) return to the middle to lead the Bears defense. The duo accounted for 139 total tackles, with Twyman's 7.7 tackles per game fourth in the Ivy League. Twyman also had five tackles for a loss, two quarterback sacks and an interception. Tylki was third on the Brown team with 5.5 tackles for loss, while making 62 tackles overall. Both made six tackles vs. Bryant, with Tylki adding a tackle for a loss.
Brown Head Coach Phil Estes: Since Phil Estes became head coach of the Bears in 1998, his Brown football teams have captured three Ivy League titles (1999, 2005, 2008), finished second four times, third five times, and overall have finished in the top half of the Ivy League in 15 of his 18 seasons, while compiling an impressive 73-53 Ivy mark (.579), 109-71 (.606) overall. Estes' 73 career Ivy League wins are the most ever at Brown and rank sixth in the Ivy League record book, while his 109 career wins overall rank 10th all-time in the Ivy League. Estes' 180 career games coached at Brown are ninth in Ivy football history. Estes, the 19th head coach in Brown history, is the second winningest coach in Brown football history, guiding the Brown football program to an unprecedented level of success, winning three Ivy League Championships, including Brown's first ever Ivy outright title in 2005. He has also coached and recruited Brown's only four Ivy League Players of the Year – Sean Morey '99, James Perry '00, Nick Hartigan '06 and Buddy Farnham '10. In the 18 years Estes has coached on the East Side, five of his players have gone on to win Super Bowl rings. The select fraternity includes James Develin of the New England Patriots (2015), two-time winner Zak DeOssie of the New York Giants (2008, 2012), the Pittsburgh Steelers' Sean Morey (2006) and New England Patriots' Drew Inzer (2001) and Chas Gessner (2003).
