
Field Hockey Falls to Ball State in Overtime, 2-1, to Open Season

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Junior Maggie Mostoller (Hummelstown, Pa.) scored the first goal of Brown field hockey's 2016 campaign to tie the game 1-1 at 30:44, but it was Ball State who would come away with the win (2-1), after recording the game winner in overtime at Trager Stadium.
The Bears (0-1) opened the first game of the season with three-straight shots, but all were turned away as the score remained 0-0. Ball State's (3-0) first shot of the contest at 15:09 was put in for a score by Darbi Gullett, who got a favorable bounce off of sophomore Katie Hammaker's (Ephrata, Pa.) pads for a 1-0 lead.
Brown tied up the score (1-1) at 30:44 when Mostoller notched a goal on a penalty stroke.
Both teams played through the second half without scoring to force overtime.
In the extra period, the Cardinals opened with two penalty corners that were successfully blocked by the Bears. Brown got some offense from senior defender Katarina Angus (West Vancouver, British Columbia) at 78:52 when she got a shot off but it sailed high. At 81:52 Anya Eicher scored with a shot from the top of the circle, giving the Cardinals the 2-1 overtime win.
Brown held a 12-10 advantage in shots for the game but Ball State tallied six shots on goals compare to the Bears' four. Penalty corners went in the favor of Brown, 5-4.
Hammaker concluded the game with four saves, including three in the second half, while Jordan Dues of Ball State registered three stops.
The Bears close out the weekend tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 3) against the tournament host, Louisville, in a 11: 00 a.m. match-up. The game will be streamed live on the ACC Network Extra.
