
Schoeller '15 Wins Silver; Three Others Compete at World Rowing Championships

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands – Brown University women's crew alumna Coco Schoeller '15 won a silver medal in the senior women's four while Cicely Madden '18, Monika Sobieszek '17, and Emma Betuel '16 raced in four U23 events combined at the 2016 World Rowing Championships, competing from Aug. 21-27.
In her first appearance with U.S. Rowing's senior national team, Schoeller helped the U.S. take second place in the women's coxless four. Madden earned a fourth-place finish in the U23 women's single scull while Betuel placed eighth and 10th in the U23 lightweight women's quad scull and U23 lightweight women's single scull respectively. Sobieszek, competing for Poland, came in ninth in the U23 women's coxless four.

Schoeller and the women's four won their heat on Monday with a time of 6:41.880. The boat came in second in the A final on Saturday, clocking in at 7:21.530 and finishing just over five seconds behind Great Britain (7:16.280).
Madden won her heat on Sunday (7:45.280) before finishing second in both the quarterfinals on Tuesday (7:47.680) and in the semifinals on Wednesday (7:35.350). She placed fourth in the A final on Friday with a time of 8:32.670, finishing just over six seconds off the podium.
In the U23 lightweight quad scull, Betuel finished in second in the B final, eight overall, on Thursday with a time of 6:46.220. In the U23 lightweight single scull, she came in fourth in the B final, 10th overall, on Thursday with a time of 7:56.920.
Sobieszek came in third place in the B final, ninth overall, on Friday with her Polish boat in a time of 7:00.340. The crew came in fifth in both its heat and repechage.
Schoeller, Brown's 2015 Marjorie Brown Smith Award winner presented to the Bears' most outstanding female varsity athlete, has trained at the USRowing Training Center in Princeton, N.J., since graduating from Brown. She won a gold medal with the U23 women's eight at the 2013 world championships.
Madden and Betuel each qualified for the world championships through victories at the 2016 U.S. Rowing World Championships Trials on Mercer Lake in Princeton, N.J., in July. Madden won the U23 women's single scull, and Betuel won the U23 lightweight women's single scull.
Making her first appearance with the U.S. U23 team, Madden had previously competed on three U.S. junior teams, earning two silver medals in the women's quad sculls. At Brown, Madden has twice gained All-Ivy honors and has rowed with the Bears' first varsity eight in both of her first two seasons. She won an Ivy title with the 1V8 in 2015 and helped the 1V8 place fourth at the 2016 NCAA Championships.
Betuel qualified for the U.S. U23 team for the second time after finishing fifth with the lightweight women's quad scull at the 2014 world championships. A winner of Brown's Marjorie Brown Smith Award presented to the Bears' most outstanding female varsity athlete, Betuel finished her collegiate career with four Ivy titles – three in the second varsity eight and one in the A varsity four. A two-time CRCA Scholar-Athlete, Betuel captured an NCAA championship with the 2V8 in 2015.
A 2016 CRCA All-American and three-time All-Ivy honoree, Sobieszek also represented Poland at the 2014 U23 World Rowing Championships in Varese, Italy.
The group, under the guidance of coaches John and Phoebe Murphy, helped the Bears claim the Ivy team points trophy in each of the last three years while finishing third, third, and sixth at the NCAA Championships in 2014, 2015, and 2016 respectively.
