Women's Crew's Solberg, Sobieszek, Place Earn CRCA All-America Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University women's crew senior Muriel Solberg and junior Monika Sobieszek have earned CRCA First Team All-America honors, and senior Ellie Place has gained CRCA Second Team All-America accolades, the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association announced on Thursday night.
In 2016, the trio helped the first varsity eight finish in fourth at the NCAA Championship as the Bears placed sixth as a team. The triumvirate rowed with the first varsity eight at the Ivy League Championship, aiding the boat to a second-place finish and Brown to the team points trophy.
Now a three-time CRCA All-American, Solberg (Rockford, Ill.), who earned degrees in Chemistry and Economics this past May, has gained All-Ivy, CRCA All-Region, and CRCA Scholar-Athlete honors in each of the last three seasons. She rowed with the 1V8 in 2014, 2015, and 2016 and won a pair of Ivy titles – with the first varsity eight in 2015 and the second varsity eight in 2013 – during her time on College Hill.
A native of Stoneham, Mass., Sobieszek garnered All-America status for the first time. She has taken home All-Ivy accolades in each of her three seasons at Brown and added CRCA All-Region 1 laurels this past spring. An Economics concentrator, she has rowed with the first varsity eight in both of the last two years at NCAAs and won an Ivy title with the 1V8 in 2015.
Place (Bellevue, Wash.), a three-time All-Ivy winner and two-time CRCA All-Region selection, also earned CRCA All-America plaudits for the first time. Place, who graduated with degrees in Geological Sciences and Hispanic Studies, has raced with the first varsity eight in each of the last three years at NCAAs, winning an Ivy title with the 1V8 in 2015.
As a team, Brown has won the Ivy team points trophy in each of the last three seasons and came in third at the NCAA Championships in both 2014 and 2015.
General requirements for nominating a student-athlete for CRCA post-season honors include: the student-athlete must meet all eligibility rules as defined by her institution, the student-athlete must have rowed at least 75 percent of the current spring season's races in the varsity boat (before and including May 19, 2015), the student-athlete must be nominated by her institution, and the head coach of the student-athlete's institution must be a member in good standing of the CRCA.
The nominated student-athletes are then selected to first and second teams based on the following criteria: strength of finish of the institution's varsity eight within the country, coach comments, and 2k erg score.
