Women's Crew Sends First Varsity Eight to Grand Final on NCAAs Day 2

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Brown University women's crew's first varsity eight qualified for the grand final in a photo finish in its semifinal to lead the Bears on the second day of the 2016 NCAA Division I Women's Rowing Championships at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center on Saturday morning.
The Bears' first varsity eight took second place in its semifinal with 0.125 seconds separating second through fourth place to advance to the grand final – set for Sunday at 11:00 a.m. PT – for the 14th time out of 20 NCAA Championships.
Brown's second varsity eight finished in fourth in its semi, and the varsity four came in sixth in its semi as both crews will compete in petite finals on Sunday at 10:24 and 10:00 a.m. PT respectively.
The first varsity eight's grand final – the last race at the championships – will include second-seeded Stanford, top-seeded California, third-seeded Ohio State, fourth-seeded Princeton, and fifth-seeded Virginia in lane order with Brown in lane three between Cal and Ohio St.
The second varsity eight's petite final, in lane order from two to six, comprises 10th-seeded Yale, 14th-seeded Michigan, eighth-seeded Stanford, ninth-seeded Wisconsin, and 12th-seeded Washington St. The varsity four's petite final includes, in lane order from one to five, second-seeded Yale, 10th-seeded Texas, eighth-seeded Wisconsin, sixth-seeded Princeton, and 16th-seeded Indiana.
With just 0.729 seconds separating first through fourth place and just 0.125 seconds separating second through fourth place, Brown's sixth-seeded first varsity eight persevered for a second-place finish in A/B Semifinal 2 out of lane three with a time of 6:19.515.
The Bears trailed second-seeded Stanford (6:18.911) by 0.604 seconds but clipped fourth-seeded Princeton (6:19.550) by 0.035 seconds and eighth-seeded Texas (6:19.640) by 0.125 seconds. Brown also topped ninth-seeded Southern California (6:25.431) and 12th-seeded Washington (6:26.754).
Brown's top-seeded second varsity eight came in fourth in A/B Semifinal 1 out of lane two behind a time of 6:30.923. The Bears fell to third-seeded Ohio State (6:21.901), seventh-seeded Texas (6:25.035), and fifth-seeded Virginia (6:25.896), finishing 5.027 seconds outside of third place. Brown defeated ninth-seeded Wisconsin (6:37.467) by 6.544 seconds and 14th-seeded Michigan (6:41.057).
Bruno's seventh-seeded varsity four placed sixth in A/B Semifinal 1 out of lane five with a time of 7:22.796. The top five boats in the race included fourth-seeded Washington (7:06.693), top-seeded California (7:09.186), 11th-seeded Michigan (7:12.151), 10th-seeded Texas (7:17.686), and sixth-seeded Princeton (7:17.946). The Bears finished 4.850 seconds behind the Tigers.
Three schools – California, Ohio State, and Virginia – qualified all three of their boats for the grand finals. Three other schools – Princeton (1V8, 2V8), Stanford (1V8, V4), and Washington (2V8, V4) – advanced two boats to the grand finals. Brown's 1V8, Texas's 2V8, and Michigan's V4 stood as the other crews to make the grand finals.
