
Women's Crew Places Sixth in Team Standings at 2016 NCAA Championships

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Brown University women's crew placed sixth in the team standings at the 2016 NCAA Division I Women's Rowing Championships, finishing in the top seven for the 19th time out of 20 championships, on the third and final day of racing at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center on Sunday morning.
The Bears, one of three programs to compete in all 20 NCAA Championships, have now come in sixth or higher in the team standings 18 times. Brown finished as the top school from the Ivy League and the top school from a non-power five conference.
Racing in the grand final for the 14th time, the Bears' first varsity eight placed fourth for 57 team points, finishing just 0.019 seconds out of third, to earn a top-five finish in the event for the 14th time.
Brown's second varsity eight won the petite final for the first time in program history, placing seventh overall in the event for 32 team points, as the Bears had reached the 2V8 grand final in 18 of the previous 19 championships. The varsity four placed fourth in the petite final, 10th overall, for 13 team points.
In the team standings, California won its third NCAA title, also winning in 2005 and 2006, with 129 points. Ohio State, the three-time defending champs, placed second with 126 points. The Golden Bears and Buckeyes have finished one-two in the team standings in each of the last four years.
Brown gained its sixth-place finish with 102 points behind third-place Virginia (112), fourth-place Stanford (107) and fifth-place Washington (106). The Bears topped seventh-place Princeton (100), eighth-place Texas (98), and 14 other crews in the 22-school event.
In the final race of the regatta, Brown's sixth-seeded first varsity eight placed fourth in the grand final out of lane three with a time of 6:22.186 finishing just 0.019 seconds out of third place and a podium finish.
Third-seeded Ohio State (6:19.035) won the event ahead of top-seeded Cal (6:21.111) and second-seeded Stanford (6:22.167). Brown topped fifth-seeded Virginia (6:23.308) by 1.122 seconds and fourth-seeded Princeton (6:26.186) by 4.000 seconds.
The Bears' top-seeded second varsity eight won the petite final out of lane one behind a time of 6:35.550, edging 10th-seeded Yale (6:37.008) by 1.458 seconds. Brown also defeated eighth-seeded Stanford (6:39.821), ninth-seeded Wisconsin (6:40.722), 12th-seeded Washington State (6:41.811), and 14th-seeded Michigan (6:42.600).
In Brown's first race of the day, the seventh-seeded varsity four placed fourth in the petite final out of lane six with a time of 7:20.518. Second-seeded Yale (7:15.440) won the event ahead of sixth-seeded Princeton (7:17.904) and 10th-seed Texas (7:17.940) with the Longhorns clipping Brown by 2.578 seconds. The Bears topped eighth-seeded Wisconsin (7:22.380) by 1.862 seconds and 16th-seeded Indiana (7:23.400).
