Women's Crew Advances All Three Boats to A/B Semis on NCAAs Day 1

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Brown University women's crew advanced all three of its boats to Saturday's A/B semifinals to open up racing at the 2016 NCAA Division I Women's Rowing Championships on Friday at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center.
The Bears, making their 20th straight NCAA appearance and seeking their eighth national title, finished second in their heat in the first varsity eight and won their heat in the second varsity eight. In a photo finish, Brown's varsity four came in third in its heat prior to winning its repechage race to claim a spot in the A/B semis.
On Saturday, Brown's first varsity eight will compete in A/B Semifinal 2 at 8:48 a.m. out of lane three while the second varsity eight will partake in A/B Semifinal 1 out of lane two at 9:24 a.m. The varsity four will race in A/B Semifinal 1 at 10:12 a.m. The top three boats in each A/B semi advance to their respective grand finals while the rest proceed to their respective petite finals.
In Brown's first race of the day, the Bears' sixth-seeded first varsity eight finished in second place out of lane two in heat three with a time of 6:23.876. Brown crossed 4.687 seconds behind third-seeded Ohio State (6:19.189) and 5.648 seconds ahead of 11th-seeded Wisconsin (6:29.524) to move directly to the A/B semis. The Bears also topped 14th-seeded Duke (6:41.924), 19th-seeded UCF (6:46.269), and 22nd-seeded Jacksonville (7:14.901).
Brown's top-seeded second varsity eight won its race out of lane one in heat one with a time of 6:35.642. The Bears finished 1.929 seconds ahead of eighth-seeded Stanford (6:37.571) and 7.449 seconds ahead of ninth-seeded Wisconsin (6:43.091). Bruno also defeated 16th-seeded Syracuse (6:47.124) and 17th-seeded Southern California (6:48.963).
In the tightest race of the morning, Brown's seventh-seeded varsity four came in third in its heat with a time of 7:19.801 out of lane two in heat two. The Bears trailed second-seeded Yale (7:18.168) by 1.633 seconds and 10th-seeded Texas (7:19.333) by 0.468 seconds. Bruno topped 15th-seeded Washington St. (7:41.274) by 21.473 seconds and 18th-seeded Northeastern (7:49.057).
The varsity four won its afternoon repechage out of lane two with a time of 7:26.238, topping eighth-seeded Wisconsin (7:29.469) by 3.231 seconds and 14th-seeded Syracuse (7:38.280) by 12.042 seconds. The Bears also bested 13th-seeded Southern California (7:45.363), 19th-seeded Navy (7:54.930), 17th-seeded Gonzaga (7:58.742), and 20th-seeded Central Florida (8:14.096).
Brown stood as one of 10 schools – along with California, Michigan, Ohio State, Princeton, Stanford, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin – to send all three of its boats to the A/B semifinals.
The first varsity eight's semifinal includes second-seeded Stanford, fourth-seeded Princeton, eighth-seeded Texas, 12th-seeded Washington, and ninth-seeded Southern California.
The second varsity eight's semifinal comprises third-seeded Ohio State, fifth-seeded Virginia, seventh-seeded Texas, ninth-seeded Wisconsin, and 14th-seeded Michigan.
The varsity four's semifinal includes top-seeded California, fourth-seeded Washington, 11th-seeded Michigan, 10th-seeded Texas, and sixth-seeded Princeton.
