
Brown Women's Crew Earns 20th Straight Bid to NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS – Brown University women's crew has earned an at-large bid into the 2016 NCAA Division I Women's Rowing Championships set for the Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Gold River, Calif., from May 27-29, the NCAA announced on Tuesday.
Brown will compete in the NCAA Championships for the 20th straight year and stands as one of three programs, along with Princeton and Washington, to take part in all 20 championships since the event's inception in 1997. Under head coach John Murphy the Bears have won seven NCAA titles, with the most recent occurring in 2011.
The Bears' sixth-seeded first varsity eight will open competition at the event in heat three in lane two at 9:24 a.m. PT on Friday, May 27 against third-seeded Ohio State, 11th-seeded Wisconsin, 14th-seeded Duke, 19th-seeded UCF, and 22nd-seeded Jacksonville.
Brown's top-seeded second varsity eight will race in heat one in lane one at 9:48 a.m. PT against eighth-seeded Stanford, ninth-seeded Wisconsin, 16th-seeded Syracuse, and 17th-seeded Southern California.
The seventh-seeded varsity four will compete in heat two in lane two at 10:48 a.m. PT vs. second-seeded Yale, 10th-seeded Texas, 15th-seeded Washington State, and 18th-seeded Northeastern.
The championship, this year hosted by the Pac-12 Conference, is composed of 22 teams. Eleven conferences were awarded automatic qualification and the remaining 11 slots were filled with at-large selections to complete the championship field. Teams qualifying for the championship as an automatic qualifier or as an at-large are required to field two boats of eight rowers and one boat of four rowers. For the first varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four, all 22 boats are seeded into four heats.
Brown will enter the championship coming off its third straight team points trophy at the Ivy League Championship. At the Ivy Championship on Sunday, Brown took victories in the second varsity eight, B varsity four, and C varsity four while finishing in second in the first varsity eight and third varsity eight, and third in the A varsity four.
