CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Six different Bears scored one goal each, and Brown allowed just one goal in the second half as No. 7 seed Brown University women's water polo beat No. 8 seed George Washington, 6-4, in the seventh-place game of the CWPA Championship at Harvard's Blodgett Pool on Sunday morning.
The Bears (11-25) combined a balanced attack with timely defensive efforts to defeat the Colonials (8-19) for the second time this season after Brown topped GW, 17-12, in Washington, D.C., on April 9.
Senior Olivia Santiago (Los Altos, Calif.) scored a goal and earned Player of the Game honors while freshman Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) posted a goal and two assists.
Senior Victoria Pierotti (Newport Beach, Calif.) and freshman McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) each registered one goal and one assist. Senior Emma Dodd (Pasadena, Calif.) and sophomore Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) scored one goal apiece, and freshman Allison Woo (Arcadia, Calif.) tallied two assists.
In net, sophomore goalkeeper Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) made nine saves, including three stops in the fourth quarter in which the Brown defense did not give up a goal.
Heilman gave the Bears a 1-0 edge midway through the first quarter on a lob shot off a pass from Miller. GW tied the score at 1-1 after the first and pulled ahead 2-1 early in the second stanza.
The Bears then went on a 3-0 run to claim a 4-2 lead with 3:29 to go in the first half. Pierotti started the run with a goal off the right wing off a McDougal feed before Miller scored off a Pierotti pass, and Dodd connected after receiving a cross-pool pass from Woo. The Colonials answered with one goal to cut their deficit to 4-3 at halftime.
Santiago opened the second half's scoring, converting on a no-look shot from two meters on a pass inside from McDougal. GW again pulled within one goal at 5-4, but McDougal responded with a goal off the right wing off a feed from Woo to push Brown's advantage to 6-4.
The Bears blanked the Colonials in the fourth quarter to finish the season on a two-game winning streak after beating Conn. College, 11-3, last night.
