
Men's Swimming & Diving Announces Award Winners at Team Banquet

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's swimming & diving team handed out its team awards at their annual banquet on Wednesday night.
Sophomore Riley Springman (Orlando, Fla.) led off the award winners, earning The Joseph Watmough MVP Award. Concluding the year at the Ivy League Championships, Springman broke two school records in the 200 IM and 400 IM, while also finishing fourth in the 200 butterfly.
Tri-captain, senior Ryan Saenger (Clarence, N.Y.), was the recipient of the squad's Win Wilson '51 Service Award, for exemplifying unselfishness through commitment and hard work in the pool, in the community, and for the team. Fellow captain, senior Cory Mayfield (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.), took home the team's Ken Miller '70 Scholar-Athlete Award, an honor given to a team member who, through dedication in the classroom and in the pool, best exemplifies what it means to be a scholar-athlete.
Qualifying for his second-straight NCAA Zone Diving berth, junior Jonathon Schlafer (Uniontown, Ohio) received the Dave Sias Diving Award. Schlafer posted a second-place finish in the 3M and placed fourth in the 1M at the Ivy League Championships.
The Thomas R. Temple '65 Coaches Award went to senior Thomas Mercurio (Novato, Calif.), an honor recognizing the qualities of dedication, personal self-improvement, and sportsmanship. Mercuiro, who has been injured for the past two seasons, served as the team manager, helping out with day-to-day operations and travel coordination as well as assisting the coaching staff in practices and meets.
To close the night's honors, freshman Nicholas Brown (Sudbury, Mass.) was named Rookie of the Year. Brown competed in the 200 IM, 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke at the Ivy League Championships.
