PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown men's crew swept all four races against Dartmouth, capped by an impressive victory in the varsity eight to retain the Atalanta Cup, as the two programs faced off Saturday morning on the Seekonk River.
The first two races of the morning featured thrilling finishes, starting with the fourth varsity, as Dartmouth held an early one-seat lead after 500 meters. The Big Green pulled out to about three seats at the midway point, before the Bears steadily pulled back into contention down the stretch and finally moved out in front at the end to win by 1.4 seconds.
In the third varsity race with an increased tailwind, the two boats were even at 500 meters before Dartmouth quickly pulled out by three seats 200 meters later, and then five seats by the 1,000-meter mark. Facing a six-seat deficit just past the midway point, the Bears gradually moved back into contention and then pulled within one seat during the final 300 meters, before closing out the furious comeback to win by half a second.
In the second varsity, Brown and Dartmouth crossed the 500 mark at neck-and-neck, but the Bears quickly moved out in front by two seats just 100 meters later. The Bears maintained a steady lead during the next 500 meters before moving a deck up for the comfortable win at 5:30.6.
The Bears carried over their momentum with a strong victory in the varsity race to finalize the four-race sweep. Brown held a slight one-seat advantage at the 500 mark, but quickly stretched the lead out to four seats by 650 meters, and then cruised to an open water victory at 5:23.9.
Brown returns to the water next Saturday when the Bears visit Princeton.
