Skiing Finishes Second Overall at USCSA Nationals

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – The Brown skiing team placed second overall at the USCSA National Championships held at Whiteface Mountain on Tuesday, March 8 and Thursday, March 10. The squad, coached by USCSA ECSC MacConnell Division Coach of the Year, Michael LeBlanc, matched the best overall finish by the program, placing second in the slalom and third in the giant slalom. Brown has competed in 12 consecutive USCSA Nationals and has come in second place three times in the past 12 years.
Three Bears earned All-American honors, in junior Ali Gunesch (Sandy, Ore.) in the slalom and combined, junior Sylvie Bertrand (Hanover, N.H.) in the slalom, junior Natalie Pearl (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) in the giant slalom and senior Katie Liebowitz (Bedford, N.Y.) in the giant slalom.
In the giant slalom, the Bears placed third overall with a team time of 6:47.25, behind Sierra Nevada College in second (6:39.72) and Rocky Mountain College in first (6:35.64). Pearl was Brown's top finisher in the event, placing ninth with a total time of 2:14.88. Liebowitz finished 15th with a mark of 2:15.86 while Gunesch came in 18th (2:16.51). Junior Sarah Bell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) also competed in the race and posted a time of 2:23.96.
In the slalom where Brown finished second overall (4:36.74), behind Sierra Nevada College (4:20.67), Bertrand led the team with a sixth-place finish with a time of 1:29.55. ECSC MacConnell Division Skier of the Year, Gunesch, placed ninth, crossing the line at 1:30.59. Liebowitz (1:36.80) and Bell (1:40.61) also completed the event.
Gunesch was eighth overall in the combined individual results with 82.48 points while Liebowitz rounded out the top-20 in 17th with 129.76 points.
Bell, Bertrand, Gunesch and Pearl were also named USCSA Academic All-Americans.
