PRINCETON, N.J. – Junior Steven Galiardo and classmate Justin Staudenmayer each earned a fifth-place finish to lead Brown University wrestling on the second and final day of the 112th Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships on Sunday at Princeton University's Jadwin Gym.
Galiardo (Chicago, Ill.) won the fifth-place bout at 149 lbs. while Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) took fifth place at 157 lbs., gaining one of the conference's six spots to the NCAA tournament at 157. Staudenmayer ensured himself a top-six finish after winning both of his bouts on Saturday.
Staudenmayer will make his second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships after garnering an at-large bid in 2015. Galiardo placed for the second straight year at EIWAs after finishing eighth a season ago and has put himself in a position to earn an at-large bid to NCAAs.
The NCAA Championships will take place from Thursday, March 17 to Sunday, March 19 at Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y. The NCAA will announce the tournament's full field, including at-large qualifiers, on Wednesday, March 9 at 6 p.m. on NCAA.com.
Staudenmayer, the No. 3 seed at 157, topped No. 5 seed May Bethea of Penn, 1-0, in the fifth-place bout. He scored an escape in the third period in the only points of the match. Staudenmayer dropped a 4-3 decision to No. 2 seed John Boyle of American in the semifinals before falling to No. 4 seed Markus Scheidel of Columbia, 4-3, in the consolation semis.
In a tight fifth-place bout, Galiardo, the No. 4 seed at 149, edged American's Tom Page, 4-3, in the second tiebreaker session. After each wrestler posted an escape in regulation, each notched another escape in the tiebreaker before Galiardo earned a takedown with 10 seconds left in the final bonus period.
Galiardo opened Sunday with a 16-14 win over Matt Kelly of Army West Point in the consolation. Galiardo took a 6-3 lead after the first period and still led 13-6 through two. Kelly pulled within 15-14 in the third before Galiardo posted an escape. No. 6 seed Victor Lopez of Bucknell pinned Galiardo in 6:27 in the consolation semifinals.
The NCAA originally awarded the EIWA five automatic qualifiers at 149 lbs. but dropped the conference's allocation to four spots due to a change in the EIWA field.
In the team standings, Brown finished in 15th place out of 16 schools with 25.5 points. Cornell won the team title with 170.5 points, and Lehigh came in second with 160 points.
