Rensselaer Rallies Past Men's Hockey, 4-3, to Claim Series

TROY, N.Y. – The Brown men's hockey team raced out to a three-goal lead, but sixth-seeded Rensselaer rallied with four unanswered goals as the Bears came up short, 4-3, in game two of the ECAC First Round at Houston Field House.
RPI (17-13-7) captured the series after a 3-2 victory in game one on Friday to earn a spot in the Quarterfinals, while the eleventh-seeded Bears finished the season at 5-19-7 overall.
Sam Lafferty (Hollidaysburg, Pa.), Nick Lappin (Geneva, Ill.) and Tyler Bird (Andover, Mass.) all scored third-period goals for the Bears. RPI notched two goals in the second and two in the third, including the game-winner in the final two minutes at 18:18 to seal the win.
Max Willman (Barnstable, Mass.) and Charlie Corcoran (New Canaan, Conn.) had two assists apiece. Tim Ernst (Pickering, Ontario) made 27 saves for the Bears. Jason Kasdorf had 33 stop on the other end for the Engineers. Brown outshot RPI, 36-31.
After killing an early penalty, Brown went right to work with a trio of goals in the opening period, starting with Lafferty on the power play at 7:25. Willman and Corcoran earned assists on the play.
Nick Lappin gave the Bears a two-goal lead midway through the period at 10:14 with his 17th tally of the season. Mark Naclerio (Milford, Conn.) skated around the net and hit Lappin right in front for the one-timer. Tommy Marchin (Algonac, Mich.) also had an assist.
Bird notched another power-play goal with 28 seconds left in the frame. After Corcoran won a clean faceoff, Willman scooped up the puck and raced toward the net, setting up Bird for the one-timer in front of the crease. Brown outshot the Engineers, 9-7, in the first period.
Milos Bubela put the Engineers back in the game with two goals in the second period, scoring 30 seconds into the stanza and again at 8:04 to trim the deficit to one, 3-2.
Riley Bourbonnais notched the game-tying goal for the Engineers at 9:27 in the third, capitalizing on the team's second power play of the period.
Jared Wilson potted the game-winner at 18:18 on a shot from the point. Brown pulled Ernst for the extra skater during the final 1:15, but a late flurry in front of the net during the last ten seconds was not enough as the home side took the win.
Brown was 2-for-3 on the power play, while RPI was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
