PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's lacrosse team defeated Colgate, 9-5, in a non-conference contest on Sunday at Stevenson-Pincince Field. The Bears were powered by a hat trick from junior Kerianne Hunt (Alamo, Calif.), who completed the feat in the opening half to get the offense going.
Brown (4-2) scored the game's first goal at 28:06 from Hunt. Colgate's (1-5) Haley O'Hanlon tied it up at 27:04 with a free position goal before Hunt recorded her second score at 2:46. O'Hanlon again responded to Hunt's goal with a score, again a free position tally, tying the game, 2-2. Freshman Zoe Zerni (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) joined the scoring with a score at 8:15. With the half coming to a close, Hunt completed the hat trick with 20 second remaining and the feed coming from senior Lauren Toy (Kentfield, Calif.).
Colgate struck first in the second half with Taylor Fischer scoring at 29:08. The Bears then scored two-straight from Toy at 28:22 and Rose Mangiarotti (Locust Valley, N.Y.) at 27:07 to take a 6-3 lead. Toy's goal was assisted by Hunt while Mangiarotti's score was assisted by freshman Hafsa Moinuddin (Chesire, Conn.).
The Raiders then scored two-straight of their own at 23:14 and 18:19, with O'Hanlon completing her hat trick on the latter goal to pull within one of Brown (6-5).
Brown then went on to score three unanswered goals to seal the win. The scoring started with senior Richael Walsh (Westwood, Mass.) scoring her first goal of the season at 17:18 on a free position score. The Bears added another free position tally at 11:48 from junior Jillian Lee (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.). Toy rounded out the goals at 8:52 with Moinuddin recording the assist. The Bear offense moved the ball around effectively the rest of the way to prevent the Raiders from scoring.
Senior Victoria Holland (Huntington, N.Y.) recorded five saves in net for the Bears while Asil Asfour also made five stops.
The Bears held the edge in shots, 22-17, and draw controls, 9-7, in the contest. Brown was a perfect 2-for-2 in free position shots while Colgate was 2-for-5.
Brown will next face its second Ivy League opponent this season in Yale for a 1:00 p.m. game on Saturday, March 19 in New Haven, Conn.
