
Jones Paces Fencing at NCAA Northeast Regional

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Senior Simon Jones earned a fifth-place finish in men's epee to lead Brown University fencing at the NCAA Northeast Regional on Sunday at Walker Field House on the campus of Vassar College.
A two-time NCAA qualifier, Jones (Louisville, Colo.) went 14-9 overall on the day on his way to a top-5 finish. Freshman Umar Masood (Pittsford, N.Y.) stood as the only other Bear to reach the final round, placing 12th in men's foil. Senior Lauren Altman (New York, N.Y.) paced the women's side with a 13th-place finish in women's sabre.
Supporting Masood in men's foil, senior Kyle Kennedy (Wall, N.J.) came in 15th place with a 7-5 record. Senior Robert Iverson (Basking Ridge, N.J.) finished in a tie for 22nd, and junior David Adler (Bellevue, Wash.) came in 31st in a field of 38 competitors.
Behind Jones in men's epee, sophomore Samuel Koch (San Francisco, Calif.) came in 24th, junior James Yoon (Austin, Texas) placed 27th, and sophomore Ryan Connor (Lincoln, R.I.) finished in a tie for 28th in a field of 41 fencers.
In men's sabre, junior Alex Palabrica (Los Angeles, Calif.) placed 17th while sophomore Alexander Catoya (Rutherford, N.J.) finished in 23rd place in a field of 33 competitors.
Following Altman in women's sabre, freshman Claudia Jiang (Basking Ridge, N.J.) came in a tie for 39th out of 49 fencers in the weapon.
Senior Audrey Lee (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) led the women's foil squad with a 17th-place finish and a 10-6 overall mark. Sophomore Clarissa Allen (Newtown, Pa.) registered a 20th-place finish, and freshman Ebba Brunnstrom (London, England) tallied a 38th-place finish in a field of 47 entrants.
In women's epee, sophomore Signe Ferguson (Wilmington, Del.) came in 20th, senior Yoojin Cha (Seoul, South Korea) placed in a tie for 38th, and junior Mika Gross (Newton, Mass.) finished 48th in a field of 56 fencers.
Next, Brown will look to send representatives to the NCAA Championships at the Gosman Sports and Convocation Center on the campus of Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., from March 24-27. The NCAA will announce selections on Tuesday.
The Bears' previous NCAA qualifiers include Jones (2014, 2015), Palabrica (2015), and Ferguson (2015).
