
Equestrian Earns Tie for First on Senior Day at URI Show

GALES FERRY, Conn. – Sophomore Anna Seto won reserve high point rider, the Bears swept the walk-trot division, and Brown University equestrian finished in a tie for first at the University of Rhode Island IHSA Show on Senior Day Saturday at the Mystic Valley Hunt Club in its spring season opener.
The Bears scored 36 points as a team, tying for first place with Johnson & Wales. URI placed fourth on the day with 30 points, and Brown moved within three points of the Rams in the IHSA Zone 1 Region 1 standings heading into next week's regular season finale.
As part of the show, Brown honored its senior class – captain Alisa Berg (St. Louis, Mo.), captain Elena Buchsbaum (Madison, N.J.), Tess Carter (Tucson, Ariz.), Sophia Cohen (Greenwich, Conn.), Noel Park (Baton Rouge, La.), Tori Sasaki (London, England), and Alexa Van Hattum (Grand Rapids, Mich).
Seto (Barrington, R.I.) gained reserve high point rider in the first show that she was eligible for the award as she made her debut at the novice level. She tied in points with four other riders and then captured the title after winning a question-off of horse knowledge.
Three Bears pointed out of their respective divisions on the day, qualifying for the Zone 1 Region 1 Regionals. Those punching their tickets to the postseason included Buchsbaum in intermediate fences, junior Clara Mae Maynard (Chilmark, Mass.) in novice flat, and Victoria Flagg (Great Falls, Va.) in novice flat.
As a team, Brown gained six blue ribbons on the day. The Bears swept the walk-trot division as sophomore Genoveva Eguiguren (Quito, Ecuador) and Natalia Moriel (Ciudad Juarez, Mexico) and freshman Yinan Liu each finished first in her respective class. Junior captain Kabisa Baughen (Sarasota, Fla.) won a first-place finish in open flat, Seto took her class in novice fences, and Maynard gained first in her novice flat class.
In open fences, sophomore Sara Nordstrom (Medina, Wash.) placed third, and Flagg came in sixth. In intermediate fences, sophomore Sophie de Menil (New York, N.Y.) finished second in her first IHSA show while Buchsbaum and Berg came in second and fifth respectively.
Behind Baughen's blue ribbon in open flat, Carter finished third, and Nordstrom placed fourth. In intermediate flat, sophomore Annaliese Fries (Kirkland, Wash.) and Berg each claimed second-place finishes, and de Menil came in fifth.
Supporting Seto's first-place finish in novice fences, sophomore Alejandra Zamora (New Canaan, Conn.) registered a second-place finish, and sophomore Lily Hertling (Paris, France) posted a fourth-place showing.
In novice flat, Maynard led the way with her blue ribbon while Seto and Flagg each tallied second-place marks. Hertling came in sixth while sophomore Caroline Marks (Seattle, Wash.) placed fourth. Sasaki came in fifth, and Van Hattum finished sixth. Making her IHSA debut sophomore Madison Kuhn (Lancaster, Pa.) placed sixth.
Park led Brown with a fourth-place finish in walk-trot-canter while sophomore Elizabeth Rao (Andover, Mass.) and junior Chloe Hequet (London, England) each notched fifth-place finishes before the Bears went 3-for-3 in walk-trot.
Next, Brown will compete in its spring regular season finale at the Holy Cross IHSA Show on Saturday, March 19 at August Farm in Holliston, Mass.
Entering the spring season, Brown held six qualifiers for the Zone 1 Region 1 Regionals – Buchsbaum, Baughen, Park, Sasaki, Seto, and Spear.
