Wrestling Falls to Penn in Home Opener, 25-9

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Justin Staudenmayer and sophomores Michael Russo and Charlie Banaszak each won individual bouts before Brown University wrestling suffered a 25-9 setback to the University of Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
In their home opener, the Bears (3-7, 2-5 EIWA) pulled within 12-9 through seven bouts, but the visiting Quakers (4-3, 4-2 EIWA) captured the final three bouts, including a pair of victories with bonus points from ranked wrestlers.
Russo (Jersey City, N.J.) put the Bears on the board with a 3-2 decision over Jeremy Schwartz at 125 lbs. after the dual meet began with the 197 and 285-pound weight classes. Russo scored an escape and a takedown in the second period en route to his victory.
Banaszak (Bethesda, Md.) pulled the hosts within 9-6 behind a 3-2 win at 141 lbs. against Marc Mastropietro. He posted a takedown in the second to tie it at 2-2 and tallied an escape in the final frame.
Ranked No. 20 at 157 lbs. according to Intermat, Staudenmayer (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) gained a 2-1 win over May Bethea. Staudenmayer, who now holds a team-high 21 wins, notched an escape and won the bout with a point for riding time.
Junior Steven Galiardo (Chicago, Ill.) tied his bout with No. 12 C.J. Cobb at 149 lbs. at 4-4 in the third period before Cobb logged a takedown in sudden victory. Senior Augustus Marker (Castle Rock, Colo.) knotted his bout with Frank Mattiace at 197 lbs. in the third, but Mattiace won, 8-5.
Next, Brown hosts Princeton tomorrow at noon.
