Stony Brook, N.Y. – Brown's starting attack of junior All-American Dylan Molloy (Setauket, NY), senior Henry Blynn (Villanova, PA) and senior Kylor Bellistri (Potomac, MD), along with senior middy Brendan Caputo (Westbury, NY) scored three goals each to lead the #8/9 ranked Bears to a 16-14 fast-paced win over #19 Stony Brook Saturday afternoon at Lavalle Stadium.
The Bears improve to 2-0 overall, while Stony Brook suffered its first loss, now 2-1 overall.
Molloy, the nation's leading scorer a year ago, added six assists for a nine-point game, while Caputo and Bellistri added one assist each.
Bears' All-American senior goalie Jack Kelly (West Islip, NY) was spectacular throughout the hard-fought game, making 20 saves.
The difference in the game may have been in the face-off x, where Brown senior Will Gural (Haverford, PA) captured 20-of-30 face-offs and sophomore Ted Ottens (Wilton, CT) took 3-of-3 face-offs, often igniting the Bears offense. Five Brown goals were scored within 30 seconds of a Stony Brook tally.
The Seawolves were led by Matt Schultz, who scored a game high four goals and handed out three assists. Alex Corpolongo posted a hat-trick with three goals, while adding an assist.
Zach Oliver started the game in goal for Stony Brook and made seven saves, while allowing 10 goals. Brad Maciejewski came in for the second half and made nine saves.
The opening 15 minutes was played at a frenetic pace with the Bears holding a 5-4 lead behind a goal by Caputo, two goals by Bellistri, another by senior Blynn and one by Molloy.
Kelly was responsible for keeping the Bears in the lead with seven first quarter saves.
Both teams settled down and Brown took charge in the second quarter, but not before Stony Brook tied the game, 5-5, on a goal by Matt Robinson at 11:51.
Consecutive goals by sophomore Jake Miller (Hartland, WI) and senior Bailey Tills (Denver, CO) lifted the Bears to a 7-5 advantage, before Schultz drew the Seawolves to within one goal, 7-6.
Brown scored three of the next four goals, with Molloy, Blynn and Caputo finding the back of the net, to grab a 10-7 lead at intermission.
The Bears cruised to a 13-9 lead after three quarters on goals by Matt Graham (Amityville, NY), Molloy and Blynn.
Stony Brook came storming back in the fourth quarter with two quick goals by Ryan Bitzer and Challen Rogers with 12:54 left to play to pull the Seawolves to within 13-11. Junior Alex Tulett (Toronto, Ontario) gave the Bears some breathing room 13 seconds later, scoring to give the Bears a 14-11 lead.
The Seawolves pulled to within one goal, 14-13, after consecutive goals by Chris Hughes and Corpolongo at the 6:55 mark of the final quarter.
Gural won the ensuing face-off for the Bears and Bellistri blasted a goal from 10-yards out to put the Bears back up by two goals, 15-13, with 6:27 remaining. Caputo's third goal of the game gave Brown a 16-13 lead with 3:23 left on the clock.
Brown hosts UMass at Stevenson-Pincince Field on Saturday, March 5, in the 49th renewal of New England's oldest rivalry. All the action starts at 1pm.
