Skiing Claims Three First Place Finishes Over Weekend

NEWBURY, N.H.– The Brown skiing team won three out of four races this past weekend to wrap up the 2016 regular season. The Bears competed at Pat's Peak in the Saint Anselm Carnival (Friday) and the Connecticut Carnival (Saturday). Sunday was the tail end of the Connecticut Carnival and was held at Mount Sunapee.
Castleton won Friday's race while the Bears came in fifth. Junior Sylvie Bertrand (Hanover, N.H.) finished first overall with a time of 1:40.26 while junior Ali Gunesch (Sandy, Ore.) posted a fifth place finish, crossing the line at 1:42.57. The fifth place finish brings an end to Brown's MacConnell Division win streak, where the team reached an impressive 46-straight victories.
On Saturday, Brown captured both races on the day, with Gunesch winning the event with a time of 53.03 and Bertrand placing third (53.35) to lead the Bears. In the second race, Bertrand claimed the overall victory, crossing the line at 1:41.73 while Gunesch was right behind in second at 1:42.54. Junior Natalie Pearl (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) grabbed a fifth place finish with a mark of 1:43.66.
The Bears claimed their third first place team finish on Sunday with Pearl leading the way, winning the race with a time of 1:58.17. Gunesch finished third (2:01.18) while Bertrand finished fourth (2:01.28) rounding out the Brown finishers in the top-five.
Brown will next compete in the USCSA Easter Regional Championship on Saturday, Feb. 27 through Sunday, February 28 at Mount Abram in Greenwood, Maine.
