PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's swimming & diving team defeated UMass, 244-76, and was defeated by Yale, 177.5-122.5, on Saturday at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center in the team's season-opening meet.
"The coaching staff is very happy with the results of our first official dual meet," said head coach Chris Ip. "Our biggest emphasis this season is for each individual to do something special in their events to inspire their teammates."
Brown opened the meet with a tie against Yale to win the 200 medley relay. Sophomore Nicholas Brown (Sudbury, Mass.), senior Connor Lohman (Prospect, Ky.), freshman Joon Sung (Los Angeles, Calif.) and senior Jack Nee (Pepper Pike, Ohio) competed in the relay, finishing in 1:31.73.
Next, junior Grant Casey (North Attleboro, Mass.) finished in first in the 1000 freestyle against UMass (9:31.67) and third to Yale.
Freshmen Jagger Stephens (Agana Heights, Hagatna, Guam) (1:40.92) and Troy Li (Carmel, Ind.) (1:41.81) earned a 1-2 finish in the 200 freestyle against UMass and were 3-5 against Yale, respectively.
In the 100 backstroke, Brown (49.62) and freshman Coley Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.) (50.33) finished 2-3, respectively against Yale and were 1-2-3 against UMass in the 100 backstroke with senior Nicholas Johnston (Pleasanton, Calif.) finishing in third (51.26). Sullivan (1:49.30) and Brown (1:50.19) then finished first and third, respectively, in the 200 backstroke against Yale and first and second against UMass.
Lohman (57.59), sophomore Waylon Jin (Berwyn, Pa.) (57.67), sophomore Carson Christuk (Newbury, Mass.) (59.32) and freshman Toshiki Takahashi (Tokyo, Japan) (59.39) took the top-four spots against UMass in the 100 breaststroke.
Junior Riley Springman (Orlando, Fla.) won the 200 butterfly against both teams (1:49.54) and picked up another win in the 200 IM against UMass (1:53.28) while earning second against Yale in the event.
In the 50 and 100 freestyle, freshman Cody Cline (Wellington, Fla.) swam a 20.17 and 44.79, respectively, to earn two second place finishes against Yale and two first place finishes against UMass.
On the board, senior Jonathon Schlafer (Uniontown, Ohio) posted a victory in the 1m against both Yale and UMass.
Senior Daniel Klotz (Berlin, Conn.) (49.30), Sung (49.34) and sophomore William Steele (Katy, Texas) (49.88) touched the wall 1-2-3, respectively, in the 100 butterfly, with all three swimmers under the :50.00 barrier.
Brown's 400 freestyle relay team of Stephens, freshman Alex Smilenov (Katy, Texas), Sung and Cline swam a faster time than the Bears' squad did in the 2016 Ivy League Championships to win the event in 3:00.57. Brown's B relay also finished second in the event against (Klotz, Nee, Troy Li, Charles Steele) UMass and third in the event against Yale.
"Today indicated that we are becoming more competitive across the board with our performances," said Ip. "The upper end speed as well as the depth of Brown men's swimming and diving is becoming apparent early in the season."
The Bears next host Bryant and MIT at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Saturday, Nov. 12 in a 12:00 p.m. meet.
