PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's swimming & diving team defeated Bryant, 218-66, and MIT, 178-117, on Saturday at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
"We enjoy the opportunity to compete against teams outside our conference," said head coach Chris Ip. "It gives the team different looks and event combinations to manage. Our goal was to demonstrate additional top end speed and allow individuals to swim events they may swim once we begin our championship season."
The Bears opened the meet grabbing the top-two spots in the 200 medley relay. Sophomore Nicholas Brown (Sudbury, Mass.), senior Connor Lohman (Prospect, Ky.), freshman Joon Sung (Los Angeles, Calif.) and freshman Jagger Stephens (Agana Heights, Hagatna, Guam) swam for the first-place team (1:32.34), while freshman Cody Cline (Wellington, Fla.), sophomore Waylon Jin (Berwyn, Pa.), senior Daniel Klotz (Berlin, Conn.) and sophomore Charles Steele (Katy, Texas) were on the squad that placed second (1:32.71).
Freshman Troy Li (Carmel, Ind.) and junior Grant Casey (North Attleboro, Mass.) next finished 1-2 in the 1000 freestyle, with times of 9:31.59 and 9:34.18, respectively.
Jin won the 200 breaststroke (2:07.47) and placed second in 100 breaststroke (57.37). Lohman finished third in the 200 breaststroke (2:09.48) and came back to win the 100 breaststroke in 57.37. Sophomore Carson Christuk (Newbury, Mass.) also had a strong finish in the breaststroke, taking second in the 200 (2:08.23).
Sophomore Liam Hollowsky (Naples, Fla.) (4:43.76), senior Kevin Mertz (Santa Rosa, Calif.) (4:44.74), freshman Alex Smilenov (Katy, Texas) (4:47.13), and junior Talbot Jacobs (Orinda, Calif.) (4:50.19) finished 1-2-3-4 in the 500 freestyle, respectively.
Sophomore William Steele (Katy, Texas), Klotz and Cline went 1-2-3 in the 100 butterfly, with marks of 50.06, 50.11 and 50.21, respectively.
Nicholas Brown won the 100 freestyle in 46.21 while Charles Steele placed third in 46.79.
Cline posted a victory in the 100 backstroke (50.64) and freshman Coley Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.) finishes second (50.93). Sullivan also took a second place finish in the 400 IM (4:05.92).
Stephens touched the wall in first in the 50 freestyle in a time of 20.90, which was his first time swimming the event all year.
Sung (1:42.25) and sophomore Liam Hollowsky (Naples, Fla.) (1:43.07) went 2-3 in the 200 freestyle against MIT and then 1-2 against Bryant in the event.
In diving, junior Bryce Campanelli (Palmyra, Va.) finished second in the 3m with a score of 261.05 while senior Jonathon Schlafer (Uniontown, Ohio) came in second in the 1m (262.55).
The Bears next host the Bruno Invitational, starting Friday, Dec. 2 and going through Sunday, Dec. 4. Brown will welcome Columbia, Dartmouth, Princeton and Rider to the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
