PRINCETON, N.J. – Brown University women's soccer sophomore goalkeeper Christine Etzel has unanimously earned Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year honors and stood as one of five Brown student-athletes to gain All-Ivy accolades via a vote of the league's eight head coaches, the Ivy League conference office announced on Thursday.
Etzel (Madison, Conn.), senior midfielder Carly Gould (Hampton Falls, N.H.), and junior center back Maclaine Lehan (Shrewsbury, Mass.) all garnered First Team All-Ivy accolades. Etzel and Gould both earned unanimous selection to the first team, representing two of the three unanimous selections to the team.
Sophomore center back Nicole Phillips (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) and sophomore forward Celia Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) both took home Honorable Mention All-Ivy laurels. Brown has now totaled four or more All-Ivy selections in each of the last six years, beginning in 2011.
In earning Ivy Defensive Player of the Year, Etzel became the first Bear to win the award since its inception in 2013 and became the first member of the program to gain a conference player of the year award since Kathryn Moos '07 collected Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors in 2003.
Etzel earned All-Ivy honors for the second time after gaining Honorable Mention accolades as a rookie. At the end of the regular season, she ranked second in the NCAA in save percentage (0.921), fourth in goals-against average (0.361) and 13th in shutouts (10).
Etzel led the Ivy League in goals against (six), GAA, total saves (70), save percentage, and shutouts. Her 10 shutouts and 0.361 GAA both rank second in a single-season at Brown with her 0.921 save percentage ranking third.
Gould collected All-Ivy plaudits for the third time, adding to her First Team honors in 2015 and Honorable Mention nod in 2014. For the season, she led Brown in points (12), goals (four), assists (four), shots (38), shots on goal (18), and game-winning goals (three). She finished her career with 64 games played, 60 games started, 36 points, 15 goals, and six game-winning goals.
Lehan, now a two-time All-Ivy selection after making the Second Team in 2014, played all 1,540 minutes on the season. Having missed just one game for the Bears in her three years, she has played every minute in all 48 games in which she has appeared. She recorded the first points of her career in 2016, notching five points on a goal and three assists.
Phillips, a first-time All-Ivy choice, started all 16 games on the year, playing 1,494 of a possible 1,540 minutes on the year.
Acting as the team's two center backs, Lehan and Phillips helped Brown rank second in the NCAA in save percentage (0.918), fifth in GAA (.409), and 10th in shutout percentage (0.625) as a team at the end of the regular season. The team allowed just seven goals on the year with 10 shutouts, ranking second on both of Brown's single-season lists. As a team, the Bears led in the Ancient Eight in goals allowed, GAA, and shutouts.
Story, also a first-time All-Ivy pick, ranked second on Brown in points (seven), goals (three), shots (25), shots on goal (14), and game-winning goals (two). She scored the game-winning goal in Brown's 2-1 win over Princeton, snapping a nine-game Ivy unbeaten streak for the host Tigers and giving the Bears their first win at Princeton since 2006.
The quintet helped Brown finish second in the Ivy League standings, marking its highest finish in the league table since winning the conference title in 1994. The Bears earned points in 14 of their 16 matches on the season and finished in the top half of the league standings in back-to-back years for the first time since 1993-94. Brown closed the year with its highest winning percentages both overall (.719) and in conference play (.714) since the year 2000.
