
Men's Hockey Opens Season at Holy Cross (Fri.), Hosts No. 14/15 Providence (Sun.)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's hockey team will open the 2016-17 season at Holy Cross on Friday (7 PM), before playing host to No. 14/15 Providence College on Sunday (5 PM) in the 31st annual Mayor's Cup contest at Meehan Auditorium. All-Time in Season Openers
Since Brown's first season in 1897-98, the Bears are 37-51-4 in season-opening games. Brown fell to Holy Cross, 7-5, at home last season to snap a three-game season-opening winning streak.
Scouting Holy Cross
Holy Cross (2-1-1) earned a pair of victories over Niagara and Providence this season and most recently fell to Boston College, 6-1, last weekend. Junior TJ Moore has six goals and two assists in four games, including a pair of power-play goals, while Danny Lopez leads the team with five assists. Holy Cross is averaging 3.75 goals per game as 14 different players have recorded at least one point. Paul Berrafato has played all four games in net and has a 3.17 goals-against average and a .897 save percentage.
Brown vs. Holy Cross All-Time
Brown and Holy Cross have met nine times, with the Bears leading the all-time series, 5-4-0. Holy Cross earned a 7-5 victory last season at Meehan Auditorium. Prior to 2003, the two teams had not faced each other since 1950.
Scouting Providence College
No. 14 Providence heads into the weekend at 2-2-1 overall and will visit Boston College on Friday before Sunday's Mayor's Cup contest. Most recently, PC downed St. Lawrence, 6-3, as six different players scored goals. Sophomore Erik Foley leads the team with three goals, while two other players also have five points apiece. Hayden Hawkey is 2-2-1 with a 2.56 GAA and a .877 save percentage. The Friars are 9-for-44 on the power play in five games, clocking in at 20.5 percent. PC earned a share of the Hockey East regular season title in 2015-16 and reached the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season.
31st Annual Mayor's Cup
Brown and Providence will return for a single game format in the 31st Mayor's Cup after playing a two-game series the last two seasons. The two teams split the two-game series last season, but Providence won back the Mayor's Cup due to goal differential. PC won the first game, 4-1, before the Bears downed the top-ranked Friars, 4-3, in overtime at home when Tommy Marchin scored off a rebound.
Brown vs. Providence All-Time
Brown and Providence, Rhode Island's only Division I hockey teams, have met 97 times, with PC leading the all-time series, 48-46-3. On March 1, 1927, Brown defeated the Friars, 4-1, at the Rhode Island Auditorium in the first meeting between Brown and Providence. Providence holds a 17-10-3 lead in the Mayor's Cup series. There have only been eight overtime games in the all-time series, with seven of the eight, and the only three ties, coming in Mayor's Cup games. Brown is 3-2-3 in overtime contests against the Friars.
