
Women's Hockey Entertains Sacred Heart on Friday and Saturday in Season-Opening Weekend

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's hockey team's 2016-17 season opens with a home non-conference series against Sacred Heart on Friday, October 21 and Saturday, October 22 at Meehan Auditorium. Friday's game starts at 6:00 p.m. while Saturday's contest will begin at 3:00 p.m.

SCOUTING SACRED HEART
The Pioneers will compete in their first action of the 2016-17 season on Friday. Sacred Heart went 12-13-2 last year, which included an 8-4-1 mark on the road. Taylor Moreland recorded 21 points in the 2015-16 campaign, ranking second on the team, to return as the team's leading scorer with 12 goals and nine assists. Sacred Heart also has three players returning who recorded nine points last year, in Megan Finlay, Cassandra Hanlon and Haley Payne. The Pioneers lost both of their goalies who saw action last season to graduation. Devan Kane (Jr.), Sarah Erban (So.) and Jadeyn Kastning (Fr.) look to fill the netminder role this season.

LAST SEASON VS. THE PIONEERS
The Bears squared off once against Sacred Heart last season, winning the contest 6-1 on November 14, 2015. Junior Sam Donovan registered a hat-trick for a career-high scoring output while senior Maddie Woo tallied a career-best three assists. Eight different skaters registered points for Brown. Sophomores Leah Olson, Cara Najjar and Jenna Hewitt-Kenda recorded their first collegiate points in the game, with all three then rookies collecting assists. Senior Monica Elvin and junior Julianne Landry split time in net for the Bears with Elvin recording the win.
BEARS RETURN EIGHT OF THEIR TOP 10 SCORERS
The Bears return eight of the team's top 10 scorers from 2015-16, including leading point and assist leader senior Maddie Woo and leading goal-scorer San Donovan. Woo led the team with 15 points on six goals and a team-best nine assists. Donovan's numbers were split down the middle, with seven goals and seven assists for 14 points. Four then freshmen were in the top 10 for scoring, in Bridget Carey (11 points), Leah Olson (11 points), Cara Najjar (9 points) and Abby Niewchas (6 points).
NETMINDERS RETURNING
Senior Monica Elvin and junior Julianne Landry return in goal for the Bears after sharing time between the pipes last season. The duo recorded seven 40+ save outings in 2015-16.
NEW FACES
The nine newcomers include: forward Veronica Alois (Andover, Mass.), defender Maybelline Beiring (Calumet, Mich.), forward Hana DeClerck (Menlo Park, Calif.), forward Sena Hanson (New Brighton, Minn.), goaltender Calla Isaac (Sherwood Park, Alberta), forward Sarah Migliori (East Greenwich, R.I.), defender Lucinda Quigley (Newton, Mass.), forward Alley Rempe (Calgary, Alberta) and defender Steph Rempe (Calgary, Alberta).
UNDERCLASSMAN SCORING IN 2015-16
Last year, Brown's freshmen and sophomores made up 62% of the team's scoring (61 points), which included 64% of the Bears' goals (24) and a little over half (54%) of the team's assists (37). The freshmen group (now sophomores) led all of the classes in assists (26) and points (38), while the sophomores (now juniors) and freshmen shared the lead in goals (12).

The Bears open conference play, hosting RV/RV Princeton on Friday Oct. 28 and No. 3/3 Quinnipiac on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Meehan Auditorium. The first game of the weekend starts at 6:00 p.m. while the second begins at 3:00 p.m.

THE CAPTAINS
Senior Maddie Woo, who dressed as the team's assistant captain in the 2015-16 season, will don the "C" for 2016-17 as the squad's lone captain. Junior Sam Donovan and sophomore Bridget Carey will suit up as assistant captains. Woo led the team in points (15) and was tied for the lead in assists (9) while Donovan carried the goal-lead with seven on the year and ranked second in scoring (14). Carey tied for second in goals scored (6) and tied for third on the team in overall scoring (11).
