PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown field hockey team was defeated by cross-town rival Providence, 2-1 in overtime, on Tuesday afternoon at Goldberger Family Field. The Bears came back from a 1-0 deficit in the second half, with senior Jaclyn Torres (Andover, Mass.) scoring the game-tying goal that eventually forced overtime. Providence was able to win the game with a score at 73:20 of overtime.
"I thought our goalkeeper Katie had an outstanding game and I was proud of our team's coordinated effort throughout the game," said head coach Jill Reeve. "We need to finish the opportunities we create for ourselves."
The Friars (12-3) opened the contest with two scoring chances on two penalty corners, with sophomore Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, Pa.) coming up with big saves on both opportunities, keeping the game scoreless in the first 10 minutes of play.
With neither team scoring in the opening half, PC came away with the advantage in corners, 4-0, and shots, 4-0.
Providence registered the game's first goal, at 49:52 of the second half when Kali Kilmer deflected in a pass from Floor Rozemeijer, to grab a 1-0 lead for the Friars.
Brown (6-6) quickly responded, at 52:19 and evened the game at 1-1 when Torres scored her team-leading fifth goal of the year. Torres collected a loose ball from the top of the arc and carried it in, beating the goalie close range.
In the closing minutes, with the score still tied 1-1, Brown was awarded two consecutive penalty corners, at 68:18 and 69:00. Unable to get a shot off on the first corner, senior Lucy Green (Providence, R.I.) had a chance on the second corner, but her shot went wide, eventually forcing overtime.
Providence opened the extra period with a penalty corner, that warranted two key saves from Hammaker. After two more saves from Hammaker, Providence registered the game-winning goal when Abby Thornton fed the ball to Sylvia Miller at the stroke mark where she deflected it in, giving PC a 2-1 overtime win.
Overall, the Friars outshot Brown, 13-3, including 9-2 in shots on goal. Providence also registered nine penalty corners compared to Brown's two, which both came in the second half.
Hammaker concluded the game with seven saves, with four in overtime, while Megan Guilbert made one stop for the Friars.
The Bears next host Cornell in an Ivy League contest on Friday, Oct. 21 at Goldberger Family Field in a 4:00 p.m. match.
