
Volleyball Falls to Ivy League Leading Princeton, 3-0

PRINCETON, N.J. – Junior libero Melissa Cairo recorded a team-high 18 digs, but Brown University volleyball fell to Ivy League leading Princeton, 3-0 (25-16, 25-10, 25-23), on Friday night at Dillon Gymnasium.
The Bears (4-12, 2-4 Ivy) pushed the Tigers (12-3, 6-0 Ivy) in the third set, but the hosts – the Ivy League co-champions in 2015 – remained unbeaten in league play, won their 10th straight match, and pushed their consecutive set win total to 16 sets won.
Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) posted her 13th match this season with 10 or more digs while junior Shirin Tooloee (San Jose, Calif.) totaled seven kills and six digs. Senior Sarah Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) tallied 14 assists and seven digs, and classmate Payton Smith (Atherton, Calif.) notched six kills.
Brown remained within 8-7 of Princeton early in the first set before the Tigers used a 7-2 streak to pull ahead 15-9. Maintaining, a six-point lead at 21-15, Princeton won four of the frame's final five points to win 25-16. In the opening stanza, Tooloee landed three kills and Lucenti and Cairo each compiled seven digs.
At the start of set two, Brown trailed at 9-7 prior to Princeton using a 15-2 run to gain a 24-9 advantage before finishing the set with a 25-10 victory. Cairo came up with four digs in the period.
Neither side gained a lead larger than three points throughout the third set. With the score tied at 14-14, Brown used a 4-1 spurt to claim an 18-15 edge. Princeton took a 21-19 lead on a 6-1 run, but the Bears rallied to pull within 24-23 before the Tigers won the stanza, 25-23. In the set, Lucenti passed out seven assists, Cairo came up with seven digs, and Tooloee had three kills.
For Princeton, Cara Mattaliano posted a double-double on 13 kills and 19 digs, Maggie O'Connell terminated on 12 kills, Devon Peterkin charted 14 digs, and Jessica Harris contributed a match-best 37 assists.
Next, Brown plays at Penn tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 15, at 6:00 p.m.
