
Volleyball Drops Straight-Set Decision at Penn, 3-0

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Junior libero Melissa Cairo registered 19 digs while senior Sarah Lucenti and sophomore Elisa Merten each narrowly missed a double-double as Brown University volleyball fell at the University of Pennsylvania, 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-21), on Saturday night at The Palestra.
The Bears (4-13, 2-5 Ivy) held late leads in the first and second sets before the Quakers (8-11, 3-4 Ivy) rallied to take both frames prior to winning the match in straight sets.
Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) posted her 14th match this season with double-digit digs. Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) tallied 15 assists and nine digs while Merten (Woodside, Calif.) compiled 12 assists and eight digs.
Senior Payton Smith (Atherton, Calif.) recorded a team-high eight kills while junior Shirin Tooloee (San Jose, Calif.) and freshman Jacqueline Jacobs (Atlanta, Ga.) each landed seven kills. Freshman Makena Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) and senior Emma Thygesen (Menlo Park, Calif.) added nine digs apiece.
In a first set that saw 12 ties and eight lead changes, Penn emerged with a 25-22 win. Neither side held a lead larger than two points until Brown pulled ahead 16-13 and extended its edge to 18-13. The Quakers knotted the set at 19-19, but Brown claimed a lead at 22-21 before the hosts won the period's last four points. In the set, Lucenti finished with six digs and five assists.
Set two followed a similar script with the teams combining for 12 ties and seven lead changes and Penn holding the only lead greater than two points at 11-8. Brown gained a 23-22 advantage down the stretch, but the Quakers captured the stanza's final three points to grab a 25-23 set win. Smith terminated on four kills in the set, and Cairo contributed nine digs.
After Brown tied the score at 16-16 in the third set, Penn used a 7-2 run to pull ahead 23-18. The Bears cut their deficit to 23-21 with three straight points, but the Quakers held on for the 25-23 victory in the period. In the final frame, Cairo came up with eight digs.
For Penn, Caroline Fuller (10 kills, 11 digs) and Courtney Quinn (10 kills, 14 digs) both logged double-doubles. Michelle Pereira notched a match-best 22 digs, and Sydney Morton tallied a match-high 29 assists.
Next, Brown plays at Yale on Friday, Oct. 21 at 7:00 p.m.
