
Men's Swimming & Diving Defeated by Columbia, 166-134

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's swimming & diving team was defeated by Columbia, 166-134, on Saturday at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
"The coaching staff is please with the results of our meets against Columbia," said head coach Chris Ip. "The depth of the team in each event is starting to show. We just got touched out in too many events the second half of the meet. The team fought hard to ensure our seniors some solid memories of their final home meet."
For first-place finishes, sophomore Riley Springman (Orlando, Fla.) picked up the top-spot in the 200-yard butterfly with a mark of 1:48.24. Junior Jack Nee (Pepper Pike, Ohio) won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.66. A relay team comprised of Nee, freshman Nicholas Brown (Sudbury, Mass.), senior Alexander Treil (Needham, Mass.) and junior Daniel Klotz (Berlin, Conn.) were victorious the 400-yard freestyle with a time of 3:06.24
Sophomore Grant Casey (North Attleboro, Mass.) placed second in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:28.27, and teammates, senior Cory Mayfield (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) and freshman Matt Orringer (Ann Arbor, Mich.), earned fourth (9:29.18) and fifth (9:45.89) to also pick up points in the race.
Sophomore Willy Lee (Palo Alto, Calif.) (50.93), Nicholas Brown (51.11) and junior Nicholas Johnston (Pleasanton, Calif.) (51.32) finished 2-3-4 in the 100-yard backstroke. In the 200-yard backstroke, Nicholas Brown finished second with a time of 1:52.11, while Lee touched the wall in third at 1:52.74 and Johnston finished in fourth at 1:53.86.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Mayfield placed second with a mark of 4:36.80 with Grant and freshman Liam Hollowsky (Naples, Fla.) not far behind in third (4:37.44) and fourth (4:37.63).
Springman finished second in the 200-yard IM (1:52.60) with junior Connor Lohman (Prospect, Ky.) in third (1:55.05) and freshman Waylon Jin (Berwyn, Pa.) in fourth (1:55.27).
Junior Jonathon Schlafer (Uniontown, Ohio) qualified for the NCAA Zone meet on both the 1 & 3 meter boards. Schlafer scored a 313.5 in the 1m and a 333.68 in the 3m to earn second place in both events.
The Bears will next compete at Cornell on Saturday, Jan. 30 with the meet starting at 9:00 a.m.
