Men's Hockey Falls to No. 12 Yale, 2-1, in Overtime

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rookie Max Gottlieb (Old Bridge, N.J.) gave the Brown men's hockey team a one-goal lead early in the second period, but Ted Hart scored the game winner for No. 12 Yale at 1:27 in overtime to lift the Bulldogs to a 2-1 victory in Saturday's ECAC contest at Meehan Auditorium.
Yale improves to 10-4-3, 5-3-2 ECAC, while Brown drops to 4-10-3, 2-7-2 in the conference.
Alex Lyon stopped 26 shots for the win, while Tim Ernst (Pickering, Ontario) recorded 29 saves for the Bears. Yale was 0-for-2 on the power play and Brown was 0-for-1 with the extra man. Sophomore Max Willman (Barnstable, Mass.) paced the Bears with six shots.
Yale came out with a 12-5 shot advantage during the scoreless opening period, but Ernst was able to come up with several big stops, including consecutive saves to deny John Hayden in front of the crease.
Gottlieb gave the Bears the lead at 2:50 in the second period. Charlie Corcoran (New Canaan, Conn.) skated toward the net through the right circle before he sent a quick pass in front of the crease, where Gottlieb finished the play for his second goal of the season. Tommy Marchin (Algonac, Mich.) also had an assist on the play.
Yale evened the score with 37 seconds left in the period. Stu Wilson won a clean faceoff in the offensive end and found Ryan Hitchcock, who banged a shot off the post and into the diving glove of Ernst, but the puck already crossed the line to tie the game, 1-1, at the second intermission.
The third period featured physical play from both sides and Yale held a slight 10-9 shot advantage, but neither team found the net to force extra time.
In overtime, Mike Doherty carried the puck into the offensive zone before sending it off to Hart, who ripped a shot from the slot past Ernst to seal the win.
Yale outshot the Bears, 31-27.
Brown heads to the North Country next weekend to face off against St. Lawrence (1/22) and Clarkson (1/23).
