NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Nick Lappin (Geneva, Ill.) and Sam Lafferty (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) both scored for the Bears, but the Brown men's hockey team fell to No. 12 Yale, 3-2, in Friday's ECAC matchup at Ingalls Rink.
Brown (4-9-3, 2-6-2 ECAC) led in shots by a 36-22 margin, outshooting its opponent for the fourth straight game, while the Bulldogs improved to 9-4-3 overall and 4-3-2 in the conference.
After Lappin spotted the Bears an early one-goal lead, the Bulldogs responded with three unanswered tallies. Lafferty trimmed the deficit to one with 2:19 remaining, but the home side held on during the final two minutes for the win.
Alex Lyon made 34 saves to improve to 9-3-3 overall, while Tim Ernst (Pickering, Ontario) had 19 stops for the Bears. Yale was 0-for-1 on the only power play of the game.
Lappin gave the Bears an early lead with his 11th tally of the season just 2:17 into the contest. Mark Naclerio (Milford, Conn.) took a shot from the left circle that was turned away by Lyon, but Lappin was right there for the rebound. Rookie Tommy Marchin (Algonac, Mich.) also picked up an assist on the play.
Brown outshot the Bulldogs by a 13-3 margin in the opening period. Yale's best opportunity came with two minutes remaining when John Hayden took a blast from the slot, but Ernst corralled the puck to maintain the one-goal lead heading into the first intermission.
Yale evened the score at 18:01 in the middle period. Ryan Hitchcock took advantage of a turnover in the neural zone and set up Joe Snively, who made the most of the breakaway for his sixth of the season to tie the score, 1-1. Brown outshot the Bulldogs, 9-8, in the second period.
After Stu Wilson pushed the Bulldogs in front at 4:57 in the third, JM Piotrowski notched his first career goal at 12:10 for the two-goal advantage.
The Bears continued to attack and it paid off at 17:41 when Lafferty scored his third of the season. Rookie Max Gottlieb (Old Bridge N.J.) raced down the left side and flicked a pass to Lafferty, who buried the shot underneath Lyon to trim the lead to 3-2.
Brown pulled Ernst with 42 seconds remaining, but was unable to set up for a good look until the final seconds, when Gottllieb's shot was blocked by DiChiara to seal the win.
