
Volleyball Sweeps Host Sacred Heart at SHU Invitational, 3-0

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Freshman Sabrina Stillwell recorded a match-high 12 kills, and Brown University volleyball beat Sacred Heart University, 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-20), at the SHU Hampton Inn Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Pitt Center.
The Bears (2-1) swept the host Pioneers (2-3) on the strength of a .378 hitting percentage in the match, hitting .421 in the second set and .438 in the third set.
One of Brown's two All-Tournament Team honorees, Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) led the Bears with a .529 hitting percentage while senior Shannon Frost (Santa Ana, Calif.) registered 10 kills on .333 hitting.
Junior Payton Smith (Atherton, Calif.), the Bears' other All-Tournament Team selection, totaled six kills, three blocks, and two aces, and freshman Emily Miller (Laguna Beach, Calif.) had eight kills on .375 hitting.
Sophomore libero Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) contributed a match-best 13 digs while senior Rachele Killian (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and junior Sarah Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) combined for 20 and 19 assists respectively.
The Bears took set one 25-22, steadily recovering from an early deficit. Trailing 13-8, the Bears used a 5-1 run to pull within 14-13. Behind at 16-13, Brown outscored SHU 9-3 to grab a 22-19 edge and held on for the set win. Stillwell and Thygesen notched five and four kills respectively in the frame.
In set two, Brown again finished strong, earning eight of the final 10 points in the set. The two sides played within three points of one another until the Bears pushed their edge to 14-9. The Pioneers tied the score at 17-17 before the visitors tallied five consecutive points.
Brown closed out the match with a 25-20 victory in set three, taking eight of the last 11 points. SHU started with a 4-0 lead, but the Bears then tied it at 7-7. Neither team could gain an advantage larger than two points until the Bears pushed their edge to 21-17 behind a 4-0 burst. Stillwell and Frost logged five and four kills respectively in the final frame.
Next, Brown plays at Providence College on Tuesday at 7 p.m. prior to beginning play at the NMSU-UTEP Borderland Classic on Friday, Sept. 11 with matches at UTEP (1 p.m. ET) and at New Mexico St. (9 p.m. ET).
