WASHINGTON – Senior Alexis Miller (Caldwell, N.J.) notched a second-half goal to cut the lead to one, but it wasn't enough to climb back from an early deficit as the Brown field hockey team fell at American, 4-1, in the season opener Friday afternoon at Jacobs Field.
American moves to 2-1 overall, while the Bears now stand at 0-1 on the young season.
Rookie Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, Pa.) posted five saves for the Bears in the loss, while Kate McBeath recorded a pair of stops on the other end to pick up the win.
Brown enjoyed a 3-1 advantage in penalty corners during the first half, but could not take advantage, as both sides managed just three shots apiece in the opening 35 minutes. American jumped on the scoreboard at 27:36 when Rafaela Rubas rushed a loose ball in front of the net and beat Hammaker to the right for the 1-0 lead at halftime.
The Eagles tacked on another goal early in the second stanza, as Lucy Whalley knocked home a rebound following a penalty corner for the two-goal lead.
Brown answered back at 53:44, when junior Katarina Angus (West Vancouver, British Columbia) sent a pass to the top of the circle, allowing Miller to convert and trim the deficit to one, 2-1.
American responded right back, however, with a pair of goals during a three-minute span. Leah DiGiandomenico and Natalie Konerth scored at 60:11 and 62:49, respectively, for the four-goal advantage and eventual victory. The two teams were even in penalty corners in the contest, 7-7.
The Bears return to action at the AU Tournament tomorrow when they face Appalachian State at noon.
