WASHINGTON, D.C. – Junior Katarina Angus (West Vancouver, British Columbia) drove home the game-winning shot off a penalty corner with 0:00 showing on the clock to lift Brown to a 2-1 field hockey victory over Appalachian State on Saturday in the AU Tournament.
The win evened Brown's record at 1-1 this season, while the Mountaineers fell to 1-2.
The Bears earned a corner with the whistle coming in the waning seconds of the contest. With time having run out, Brown was still able to take its penalty corner.
Senior Anna Masini (Ann Arbor, Mich.) inserted the ball to fellow senior Emily Arciero (Avon, Conn.), who set up the blast by Angus, which found the left side of the goal.
Appalachian State scored just 7:13 into the game when Taylor Cimbalist found Jordan Van Cleave open with a penalty corner insertion.
Brown tied the game 11:45 into the second half when Katherine Kallergis (Lake Forest, Ill.) converted a loose ball in front. Senior Hannah Rogers (Los Altos, Calif.) was credited with an assist on the play.
The Bears used a 9-6 edge in shots after halftime to finish with a 14-10 advantage in the game. Rookie goalkeeper Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, Pa.) made five saves to pick up the win.
Brown returns to play on Saturday, September 12 when they host Bryant in the home opener at noon.
