Bears Fall To Riverhawks, 2-1, Despite Ellie Seid's First Career Goal

Providence, R.I. - Brown freshman Ellie Seid (Larchmont, NY) scored her first career goal, but it wasn't enough, as the Bears fell to UMass Lowell, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Goldberger Family Field. Lowell extends its record to 5-1 overall, while Brown falls to 2-2.

UMass Lowell out-shot the Bears by a 9-5 margin and held a 9-7 advantage in penalty corners.

Bears' freshman goalie Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, PA) turned in a strong performance with nine saves, while Riverhawks' goalie Kelsey Federico made three saves, and Marana Fiedtkou a key defensive save.

The Riverhawks got on the scoreboard first when Jessica Walsh took a pass from Georgia Cowderoy, and found the back of the cage with 16:02 left in the second half.

UMass Lowell extended its lead to 2-0, on a goal by Christa Doiron with 12:11 remaining in the game on a pass from Sophie Watt.

Sied's goal at the 58:31 mark of the second half cut the Riverhawks' lead to 2-1, taking a pass from junior Lucy Green (Providence, RI) for the score. The Bears peppered the Lowell goal in the final minutes, but were unable to convert the game-tying goal.

While the game was scoreless at the half, it wasn't for lack of end-to-end action.

Brown's best opportunity of the opening 35 minutes came on a fast break at the 16:30 mark when junior Jaclyn Torres (Andover, MA) just missed from the right side and Seid's shot went wide on the rebound.

UMass Lowell just missed on a three-on-one chance with four minutes left in the half, but Hammaker made back-to-back point blank saves for the Bears to keep the Riverhawks off the scoreboard.

The Bears return to action next Thursday, September 17, traveling across town to face the Providence College Friars at 5pm.
