Women's Crew Tops Stanford, Upper Thames in Henley Quarters

HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England – Brown University women's crew's entries in the women's open eight and women's quad scull events won their quarterfinal races on Friday on The River Thames to advance to Saturday's semifinals at the Henley Royal Regatta 2015.
"It was certainly an exciting day of racing for our school as we competed against tough opponents in Upper Thames Rowing Club and Stanford," Brown head coach John Murphy said. "The wins were made all the more meaningful by the fact that our president Christina Paxson made the trip to Henley and was following in the launch. We look forward to the next round."
Brown's eight defeated Stanford in the quarterfinals of the Remenham Challenge Cup with a verdict of two-thirds of a length to advance to Saturday's semifinals and a match-up with Western Rowing Club at 6:30 p.m. local time (1:30 p.m. ET). The Bears' quad beat Upper Thames RC by four lengths in the quarters of the Princess Grace Challenge Cup to proceed to the semis and a date with Imperial College London at 3:10 p.m. (10:10 a.m. ET).
The Bears' eight – which advanced to the quarterfinals after finishing in the top four of a 13-boat time trial on June 26 – bested a Stanford boat which edged Brown twice during the NCAA season. The Bears dropped a 0.9-second decision to the Cardinal on April 12 and finished behind Stanford in a semifinal race at the NCAA Championships on May 30.
The eight came in with a time of 6:52 while the quad crossed the finish with a time of 7:28.
If Brown wins its races on Saturday, the crew's boats will advance to Sunday's finals with times for races announced at the conclusion of Saturday's racing.
