PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University women's crew senior Whitney Naylor has earned CRCA First Team All-America honors, and junior Muriel Solberg has earned CRCA Second Team All-America honors, the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association announced on Monday.
A native of New Canaan, Conn., Naylor gained All-America accolades for the first time while also winning First Team All-Ivy and CRCA First Team All-Region 1 laurels this past spring. A team captain, Naylor rowed in the bow seat of the first varsity eight boat in all 14 races and graduated with a degree in business, entrepreneurship and organizations in May.
Solberg, a native of Rockford, Ill., garnered All-America status for the second time after taking home CRCA First Team All-America honors as a sophomore. This past spring, she collected First Team All-Ivy, CRCA First Team All-Region 1, and CRCA Scholar-Athlete plaudits. She rowed with the first varsity eight in all 14 races and holds a double concentration in chemistry and economics.
The duo helped the Bears' first varsity eight win gold at the 2015 Ivy Championship, giving the crew its ninth Ivy title all-time and first since 2008. The first varsity eight went on to win the petite final at the NCAA Championships, finishing the year with a 36-7 record over 14 total races. The varsity eight's performances aided Brown in placing first at the Ivy Championship and third at the NCAA Championships in the team standings.
General requirements for nominating a student-athlete for CRCA post-season honors include: the student-athlete must meet all eligibility rules as defined by her institution, the student-athlete must have rowed at least 75 percent of the current spring season's races in the varsity boat (before and including May 19, 2015), the student-athlete must be nominated by her institution, and the head coach of the student-athlete's institution must be a member in good standing of the CRCA.
The nominated student-athletes are then selected to first and second teams based on the following criteria: strength of finish of the institution's varsity eight within the country, coach comments, and 2k erg score.
